On Oct. 16, Valley Center High School freshman Mati Newman placed 42nd out of 88 golfers at the Class 5A state tournament in Emporia.

Hornets split tri to end regular season
The Hornets lost 25-13, 25-22 to Goddard, ranked eighth in Class 5A, and ended Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II play at 6-6. In the second match, they bounced back to defeat Pratt 25-13, 25-22. Valley Center will take an 18-18 record into the Oct. 21 substate volleyball tournament at home.

Valley Center to host substate
The most recent Kansas Volleyball Association rankings available before publication have three teams from Valley's substate ranked in the top 10. They are No. 3 Maize, No. 4 Newton and No. 7 Andover. Emporia, Kapaun Mt. Carmel, Topeka West and Wichita Heights round out the field.

Hornets finish last at league cross country
On Oct. 14, Valley Center High School visited Hutchinson's Prairie Ridge Park for the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II cross country meet and the Hornets were met with some tough competition.

Valley loses two as regular season winds down
The Hornets lost to Andover, 2-1, at home Oct. 17, falling to 5-10. It came five days after losing to McPherson, 2-0, on the road.

Cross country, soccer regionals ahead
The cross-country regional will be Oct. 21 at Newton's Centennial Park. Teams participating include Andover, Emporia, Newton, Salina Central, Salina South, Topeka West, Valley Center and Wichita Heights. The state meet is Oct. 28 at Rim Rock Farm outside of Lawrence.

Middle school volleyball struggles as season ends
Both ďA" teams played in their respective Pioneer League II tournaments Oct. 14. All four teams played Oct. 12 at Derby North, with both eighth-grade teams and seventh-grade ďA" posting wins.

VCMS runners improve times at league meet
Nearly across the board, Hornet runners saw a drop in their times from a previous meet at the same course, a good way to end the season, coach Lee Owens said.

Eighth-graders finish season with a win
The Valley Center Middle School eighth-grade football team came back to force overtime and win its final game of the year, 26-20, Oct. 12 at home against McPherson.
