Caleb Karlowski prepares to pin Junction City's Joe Casey in a 182-pound match at Emporia Jan. 24.

Hornets take down 2 ranked teams

The Valley Center High School wrestling team practiced what its coaches preached the past two weeks, paying dividends at the tough Emporia duals tournament Jan. 24.

After spending 10 days — uninterrupted by competition — working to eliminate individual mistakes, the Hornets competed well against some of the state's toughest wrestlers, coach Brian Shelton said.

"If you looked at it on paper before we went, we weren't supposed to beat anybody," Shelton said. "And it turned out we beat two top-10 teams in 5A. We beat the 5A teams and lost to the 6A teams. There were no sissies there. Those were five very, very, very good teams. To come away beating two of them, I feel very good about it."

Unranked Valley Center beat Class 5A's fifth-ranked Topeka Seaman and No. 6 Emporia and wrestled to within striking distance of Derby (No. 7 in 6A) and Junction City (No. 3 in 6A).

"Our kids wrestled well," Shelton said. "We had two weeks of practice with no competition. We about bored them out of their minds. We just drilled the basics over and over, and it showed. We did some things we hadn't been doing and we didn't make the mistakes that we had been making. We're in the right direction."

Michael Turkali went 4-1 at 113 pounds, scoring pins over Derby's Brett Hull and Topeka Seaman's Dray Podlena. Turkali's only loss was to Class 6A's sixth-ranked wrestler, Riley Alderman of Olathe North.

"We worked on a bunch of stuff we needed to work on," Turkali said. "We worked on it in practice and tried to apply it in Emporia. … I was trying to get better at tying up and trying to lock it up so where I could get a blast off."

Ryan Delforge went 4-1 at 126 pounds with a pin and two major decisions. He also won a 4-3 decision over Topeka Seaman's Khamin Crow, who is ranked fourth in 5A.

"I was just trying to work on throw-bys and tilts on top," Delforge said. "It worked out pretty good."

Nick Romig was 3-2 at 120 with pins against Junction City and Olathe North.

Don Boone was 3-2 at 145 with two pins and a major decision.

Caleb Karlowski was 3-1 in the matches he wrestled at 182, recording a couple of pins.

Up next, Valley Center will travel to Ark City Jan. 29 for an Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II dual against the third-ranked Bulldogs. The Hornets also will compete in the Concordia Tournament Jan. 30 and 31.

The junior varsity wrestlers competed in a tournament in Goddard Jan. 24 and will be at Fredonia Jan. 31.

At Goddard, Dallas Boone went 3-1 at 120 pounds, all pins.

Bradyn Moler was 3-3 at 132, winning two decisions and a major decision.

Also at 132, Haydn Thompson was 4-1 at 132, winning three decisions and a major decision.

R.J. Hoyt was 3-1 at 145 with a pin, a decision and a major decision.

Kaden Lewis went 3-1 at 170, scoring a pin and two decisions.

Tony Adams was 3-1 at 195 with a pin and a pair of decisions.

Also winning matches were Quentin Collins at 113, Cole Miller (two) at 120, Asa Unruh (two) at 120, Braeden McKenney at 120, Kaleb Casey at 126, Brantley Loibl at 132, Chase Ramirez (two pins) at 138, Isiah Hopper at 152, Tyler Miller (two pins) at 160, Coby Carter at 160, Evan Morales (two) at 160, Isaac Neal at 170, Tommy Brown at 182 and Levi Kemp at 285.
