Youth programs deserve oversight Last Updated: January 29, 2015 Unfortunately, this isn't the first time the Valley Center community has been taken advantage of and it probably won't be the last. Life would be much simpler if we could trust everyone in authority, but all of us would be well-served by heeding a simple lesson in the recent case of a coach accused of embezzling thousands of dollars from a junior cheerleading program: All organizations handling other people's money should have strict oversight systems in place, offering regular and intentional checks and balances. Fortunately, most of Valley Center's volunteer, sports and quasi-professional organizations already have such oversight. The junior cheer program did not. Neither did a community fund that was set up to help the family of a young girl who died six years ago. A woman overseeing the fund pleaded guilty in 2008 to taking more than $1,300 from the account. An oversight system protects leaders as well as participants. — The Ark Valley News |
