Looking Back Last Updated: August 22, 2013 50 years ago Mrs. Barbara Logan was hostess at a baby shower at her home at 600 W. Third, complimentary to Mrs. Jack (Joyce) White and son, Marc Allen, on Sept 3. Appropriate games were played and all enjoyed watching Joyce unwrap gifts. Refreshments were served to 10 guests. Valley Bowl started its first sanctioned league for junior girls. High score went to Cathey Slater with a 110. Cheryl ReQue followed with a 103. To date there are five girl teams organized, and another team is desired. 40 years ago Guests during the past week in the home of Nellie Fanning were Alice Schweer, June Fike, Jessie Howlett, Corky Edwards from Texas, Flo Ann Davis from Texas, Larry Carter and two daughters Nancy and Deana. Young Morris Herron, who was recently injured in an automobile accident, was home from the hospital and recuperating nicely. 35 years ago A group of friends met at the Valley Village Inn Thursday morning for the homemade cake and coffee honoring the birthday of Beulah Beard. The Valley Center High School Pop Choir, under the direction of Dean Dellinger, and the band, directed by George Naylor, were among the high school groups selected to play for President Carter's visit to Wichita. 30 years ago Viola Lackey visited last week with her daughter, Vivian, and son-in-law, Dr. Terry Denison, of Leawood. She also visited her granddaughter, Becky, and her husband, Ted Hartseg of Manhattan. Randy Weber, son of Frank and Shirley Weber, is a member of the Chamber Singers. He is a junior at WSU. In addition, Weber is a member of the University Singers. Jeff Eastman, son of Mr and Mrs Harold Eastman, also is a member of the Chamber Singers. He is a freshman. In addition, Webber is a member of the University Singers. 25 years ago Bill and Theresa Siebert returned from a 15-day fall foliage tour with Horizon Travel. Highlights of the trip were Gettysburg, Philadelphia, New York City and the Statue of Liberty, Niagara Falls and the fall foliage in Vermont and New Hampshire. Julie Marshall is president of National Honor Society. Kathy Walker is vice president while Nikki Epley is secretary. Spike Anderson, Kyttra Heston and Lisa Walker are the other two-year members. National Honor Society sponsors are Dean Delinger and Joan Leland. 20 years ago Kyttra Heston of Valley Center will appear as Salome in the musical comedy "Robber Bride Groom" in Wilner Auditorium at Wichita State University. Donna J. Allen earned her Ph.D. in health studies at Texas Women's University in Denton, Texas. She is the daughter of Marie Look. 15 years ago Leah Wilbur of Valley Center pledged Alpha Chi Omega sorority at Kansas State Univesity. Tim and Jennifer Scott of Valley Center announced the birth of their son, Cameron Lathaniel, on Sept. 13, 1998. He weighted 7 pounds, 11 ounces and was 19 ½ inches long. He has a sister, Caitlyn, 2. Grandparents are Marcia Scott and Max and Myrtle Purkey, all of Wichita; Donn and Deborah Bischoff of Maize; Lester and Vera Scott of Hartshorne, Okla; Arnold and Nelda Bischoff of Talmage, Neb., and Bill and Donna Kastens of Nebraska City, Neb. 10 years ago Micca Stoner of Valley Center and Wayne Bentley of Wichita announced their engagement and approaching marriage. The bride-elect is the daughter of Arnold and Vicki Stoner of Valley Center. The prospective groom is the son of Connie Shepherd and Vernon Bentley, both of Wichita. The couple planned an Oct. 4 wedding. Marine Corps Pfc. Terry McClure, son of Theresa and Brent Hobson of Valley Center, completed the basic assault amphibian vehicle repairman course at Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, Calf. 5 years ago Katie Ann Withrow and Daniel Jacob Hayes announced their engagement. She is the daughter of Lisa and Dr. Brian Withrow of Bel Aire, and he is the son of Lisa and John Hayes of Bel Aire. Katie is a graduate of Heights High School and Wichita State University. She works in quality assurance at Spirit Aerosystems. Daniel is a graduate of Heights High School. He attended Allen County Community College in Iola and Fort Hays State University in Hays. He works for Kansas Gas Service. The wedding and reception was Oct. 18 at the Grand Chapel in Wichita. The couple will honeymoon in Nassau, Bahamas, and reside in Valley Center. Rand and Anita Langhover announced the birth of their daughter, Leila Adelle Langhover, Sept. 10, 2008, in Little Rock, Ark. She weighed 3 pounds, 5 ounces, and was 17 inches long. Leila Adelle has a sister Jennifer Langhover, and a brother, Christopher Langhover. Her uncle, Dwayne Langhover, lives in Valley Center. Rand is formerly of Valley Center. |
