45th, Hillside set to close The News staff
    Road and traffic improvements to the 45th and Hillside intersection will begin May 21 with a project that will widen the intersection to provide left- and right-turn lanes in all directions and install a new traffic signal. The estimated completion is late 2018.
Bel Aire council approves purchase of new dump truck Taylor Messick
    On May 15, the Bel Aire City Council approved the purchase of a 2019 International 46,000 GVWR dump truck. This truck will replace the 1999 International dump truck that the staff nicknamed “The Pumpkin."

Boys third, girls fourth at league track meet Taylor Messick
    The Valley Center High School track team competed in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II meet May 11 in Goddard. The boys finished third as a team and the girls were fourth.
Former Hornets help K-State win Big 12 track title The News staff
    Former Valley Center High School track stars Morgan Wedekind and Taylor Latimer were members of the Kansas State University's women's track team that captured the Big 12 Outdoor track championship, held May 11 through 13 at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
Soccer team earns first-round bye with 14 wins Emmie Boese
    The Valley Center High School soccer team had a bye this week for the first round of the Class 5A regional tournament. Their regular-season record was 14-1-1. The Hornets ended their regular season by beating Campus 6-0 on May 10.

Council advances fire, police proposal Chris Strunk
    The city council on May 15 gave unanimous first-round approval to an ordinance that would establish the department and make the police chief, Lloyd Newman, the department's director, head of the “law enforcement division" and the “fire protection division."
Five teachers serve four-day suspension Chris Strunk
    School district Superintendent Cory Gibson said this week that the teachers were suspended with pay, but would not elaborate on the reason for the discipline.
Four wrecks in four days
    On May 9, a vehicle struck the rear of another vehicle that was parked in a line of cars on Ford (77th North) at the Broadway intersection. Ford is busier these days because of 85th being closed for reconstruction.
Man accused in shooting dies
    A rural Valley Center man who was accused of shooting a woman and another man in 2015 in a home northwest of Valley Center was found dead in Nebraska last week.
School board OKs pay raises Chris Strunk
    During its meeting May 14, the school board approved the negotiated contract for teachers, salaries for non-teaching licensed staff and the salary scale for hourly employees.
