Kechi council approves equipment for public works Taylor Messick The department had budgeted $160,000 this year for the purchase of a new street sweeper. However, the department and city are happy with their relationship with local business Cillessen & Sons, which recently started sweeping the city's roads; so the department suggested spending that money on other needs that have popped up recently.

Gillen to resume football career at Sterling Chris Strunk The 6-foot-4, 220-pound defensive end signed a letter of intent April 12 to play at Sterling College in the fall.

Girls track third, boys fourth at Mac Taylor Messick The Valley Center High School track team visited McPherson on April 26. The girls finished third and the boys were fourth out of nine schools.

Hornet senior signs with Dodge City Randy Fisher Two years after returning to Valley Center High School, senior Joe Petrakis will get a chance to display his basketball talents after graduation. He signed a letter of intent April 17 in the school library to play next year at Dodge City Community College.

Hornets sweep Goddard, even record Randy Fisher For the first time this late in the season since who knows when, the Valley Center High School baseball team has evened its record. With a sweep at Goddard and a split at Eisenhower, The Hornets are 8-8 overall and finished 6-6 in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II.

Middle school track does well at recent meets The News staff Among the highlights of the recent meets was seventh-grader Nolan Bevan's school record in the 200-meter dash April 26. His time of 25.5 seconds broke the record of 25.6 set in 1995 by Daniel Jackson.

Driver distracted by dog wrecks The News staff A canine apparently caused a crash April 27 in Valley Center because the dog was a distraction to the driver.

Local man arrested in fatal crash Chris Strunk Stacy Woodson, 37, died at the scene of the crash west of Wichita, while his son was pronounced dead at Wesley Medical Center.

Vehicle found in middle of wheat field The News staff Valley Center police responded to a report of an abandoned vehicle at 69th North and Seneca April 28. Police found a white Hyundai in the middle of a wheat field. There was no one inside.

Weather alters Hornet launch Chris Strunk The Valley Center Middle School science experiment was launched April 26 from the District Stadium, went 21 miles up, traveled 150 miles to the east and came down as the balloon lost air northeast of Parsons later that day.
