Kechi street project recognized The News staff The City of Kechi, Kansas Paving Inc. and Professional Engineering Consultants P.A. have been awarded Transportation Project of the Year Award by the American Public Works Association Kansas Chapter for the Tigua Street improvements. Tigua is a frontage road that connects Woodlawn to Rock Road. The connection provides safer highway access for visitors, residents and multiple Kechi businesses. The project was funded primarily by a $2 million grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Hornet golfers battle course and conditions The News staff The Valley Center High School golf team opened the season April 2 in far from ideal conditions at Crestview Country Club in Wichita.

Hornet soccer team splits road games Jeremiah Strunk The Hornets trounced El Dorado March 29, but were unable to overcome the Maize Eagles April 3.

Hornet tennis does well at Emporia Randy Fisher Blue Valley Stilwell took top honors with 49 points, followed by Blue Valley Northwest with 47, Valley Center 45, Shawnee Mission East 43 and Lawrence Free State 40. Rounding out the field were Andover with 21, Emporia 17 and Shawnee Heights 8.

Hornets sweep Newton in opener Chris Strunk The Hornets started the season with a 20-1 and 16-6 doubleheader sweep at Newton March 29.

Middle school tennis team does well against McPherson The News staff The Hornets swept No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Cade Martin and Lejer McDaniel won No. 1 doubles 6-1, and Robby Clausel and Noah Simmons won No. 2 doubles 6-5. Also winning doubles matches were Camdon Waterson and Andrew Lobermeier, and Josh Hailey and Preston Schuetz.

Track team starts season at Andale Relays Taylor Messick Taking first place for the boys team was Zach Williams. He won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.12 seconds. He placed first in the long jump as well, with a distance of 21-4.75. Williams was on the 4x100 meter relay team, which also took first with a combined time of 43.84 seconds. Others on the team were Max Fields, Kory Martinez and Larry Wilson.

Valley opens with doubleheader split Randy Fisher After a frustrating 4-0 loss in the first game, the Valley Center High School baseball team bounced back to win the second game 9-4 and split its season-opening doubleheader March 29 at Newton.

County e-waste drop-off set The News staff Sedgwick County Environmental Resources will host two events in April so residents can safely dispose of e-waste for free. They will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 5 through 7 and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 12 through 14, both at the Sedgwick County West Yard, 4701 S. West Street.

Jury finds Morris guilty of murder The News staff After a nearly weeklong trial, a jury found Willie Morris guilty of first-degree premeditated murder, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated battery.

Man arrested after fight Chris Strunk A Valley Center man was arrested after a fight at a fourplex near Lions Park March 30. Police said the man fired a handgun inside the home. No one was hurt.

Waterline break closes school Chris Strunk A leak was noticed about 6 a.m. April 1. A part to repair the pipe was unavailable until the next day. So school officials decided to cancel classes for the fifth- and sixth-grade students who attend VCIS.
