A better solution to curb abuse?
The City of Valley Center decided this week to cut evening and weekend hours at its tree limb and grass clipping dumpsite in the industrial park because tree-trimming companies are using it, despite a rule against commercial use, to discard large piles of limbs and large tree trunks.

Kechi still getting used to new purchasing policy Taylor Messick
The new policy was an attempt by staff to make smaller, day-to-day or emergency purchases easier. Staff proposed a plan similar to ones held by other cities that allowed purchases under $5,000 to be approved by department heads or the city administrator, rather than waiting until the next council meeting.  The council amended the suggested policy so that anything over $2,000 will need to be approved by them. At least three price quotes are also required for purchases between $2,000 and $20,000.
Letters to the Editor
Residents should question firing
I am writing today to support community members pursuing answers in the firing of Valley Center Fire Department Capt. Rob Tormey. While I understand that it's a “personnel" matter and does require discretion, I can personally assure you that policy, procedures and administrative codes involving the dismissal of a city employee were not followed, and his firing was unjust.

Park City establishes stormwater fees Taylor Messick
Most cities are establishing stormwater fees to help pay for projects related to drainage. The idea is that non-permeable surfaces on any property lead to stormwater runoff that can damage property. For example, water runs off a roof and down a driveway when it rains, but it has to end up somewhere. That runoff can lead to flooding, which can damage property.
