Education foundation grateful for grant Thank you to Menocause: Ignite Valley Center for the generous $3,500 grant given to the Valley Center Education Foundation. All funds will be used to supplement the grants given to teachers in USD 262 in the fall of 2018 for the 2018-19 school year.

City issues six permits The News staff The City of Park City issued six building permits during December for a total valuation of $392,312.

Echo Hills development hits another delay Taylor Messick Last year, the project, which is at 53rd North and I-135 and was the home of a former golf course, was faced with lengthy delays after a historical organization identified the site as a possible burial ground for Native Americans. An archaeological firm performed a study of the land and determined that wasn't the case.

Former Park City mayor appointed to Kansas House The News staff The Sedgwick County Republican Precinct Committee met Jan. 20 at Park City City Hall to select a replacement for former Rep. Dr. Greg Lakin, who had been appointed as chief medical officer for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Suspicious characters gone The News staff A couple of suspicious-looking characters seen using a light bulb to smoke drugs in a vehicle in Park City were no where to be found when police responded.

Hornets finish sixth in Jam Randy Fisher and Emmie Boese The Valley Center High School boys basketball team hosted the 35th annual January Jam, held Jan. 18 through 20. After four consecutive years of placing either fourth or fifth, this year the Hornets went 1-2 and were sixth. They are now 5-7 for the season.

Hornets open with win at Hiawatha Randy Fisher This was the year for the Valley Center High School girls basketball team to play its January tournament in El Dorado. Through an administrative mix-up that dates back awhile, the Hornets are playing this week in Hiawatha, in northeast Kansas, Jan. 23, 25 and 27.

Scholars’ Bowl team does well to start ’18 Emmie Boese The team competed in the first flight of the Tournament of Champions at Bishop Carroll High School on Jan. 6 and placed first, going 4-0 in bracket play. The Hornets then went on to place ninth overall.

Tennis player signs to play at Ottawa Ian Clifton, who is poised to lead an experienced and highly touted Valley Center High School tennis team this spring, sealed plans to play on the collegiate level in the fall.

VCMS boys win two games in recent action The News staff The Hornets hosted Salina Lakewood Jan. 22, played in a “B" tournament at Goddard Eisenhower Jan. 20 and took on Andover Central on the road Jan. 18.

VCMS girls ‘B’ teams third at tournaments The News staff Only Valley's seventh-grade “B" team was victorious Jan. 22 at Salina Lakewood and Jan. 18 at home against Andover Central. Both “B" teams split two games in their respective tournaments Jan. 20 at Goddard.

Ducks found dead at pond The News staff The Valley Meadows neighborhood lost two frequent flyers this weekend, when a pair of ducks that were regulars at the Arrowhead Park pond were found dead Jan. 21.

Grants ‘Ignite’ Valley Center The News staff In its inaugural year, Menocause: Ignite Valley Center awarded $20,000 worth of grants to help eight local organizations.

Housing survey planned The News staff Beginning Jan. 29, the South Central Kansas Economic Development District (SCKEDD) will be in Valley Center, surveying residential neighborhoods. Staff will drive and walk each street and alley, but will not require access to the interior of any residence.
