    Helen B. Claycomb, 89, of Valley Center, died Aug. 18, 2017. She was retired from the former Kansas Social and Rehabilitation Services.

    Lloyd Warren Verbeck Jr., 85, of Park City, died Aug. 18, 2017. He was a retired Grumman and Cessna aircraft jig builder.

Holding line on taxes is welcome
    The Valley Center school board and the Valley Center City Council deserve a pat on the back this week for approving operating budgets that don't include tax increases. In fact, if you're keeping score, your overall property tax mill levy will decrease if you own property in the city or in the school district.

Echo Hills development delayed again Taylor Messick
    Mike Loveland is the developer representing J.P. Weigand & Sons for the Echo Hills development. Loveland explained the recent roadblock. He said multiple studies were required by Housing and Urban Development before the project was to start. During the process of completing these studies, an environmental study turned up something unexpected.

Valley looks for success with young team Taylor Messick
    Head coach Steen Danielsen is getting the team ready for an Aug. 29 season opener at Berean Academy. His squad consists of about 10 seniors and juniors. A similar sized sophomore class and a very large freshman class will round out the varsity and junior varsity teams.

Bookkeepers charged with theft Chris Strunk
    A couple of former bookkeepers are facing felony theft and computer fraud charges for allegedly embezzling thousands of dollars from two separate Valley Center businesses over the past couple of years.

    Two people were arrested Aug. 16 after a car chase that started in a Valley Center neighborhood and ended in Park City. One of the suspects is facing felony charges, while the second suspect was released with no charges.
