Alleys win father-son tennis tournament The News staff Jim Alley and his son David Alley captured the title in the fourth annual Valley Center Father-Son Tennis Tournament June 17 at the Valley Center High School courts.

Swimmers capture win over Derby The News staff The girls won 243-201, while the boys won 213-158.

UK soccer players host local camp The News staff Valley Center's AYSO Region 253 hosted a UK International Soccer Camp June 5 through 9. Thirty Valley Center kids, age 5 to 16, attended. They were taught by four coaches from the United Kingdom — James Ridge of Birmingham, England, Mo Saed of Birmingham, England, Reece Hands of Sheffield, England, and James Ridge of Blackpool, England. Hands is currently a professional soccer player in England for Gainsborough Trinity.

Museum raising money The News staff The museum is managed by the Valley Center Historical & Cultural Society, an all-volunteer group.

Officers take animal calls The News staff On June 12, officers assisted Park City police at 1601 E. 91st Circle North by retrieving a snake from a vehicle. On June 13, officers responded to 221 N. Birch, where a baby opossum was on a front porch behind a dumpster. The opossum wasn't bothering anyone, so officers left it alone.

Summer storm damages trees Chris Strunk High winds damaged trees in the Valley Meadows neighborhood north of Fifth Street and west of Meridian and in some areas of west Valley Center.

Valley Center city budget holds the line on taxes Chris Strunk The budget is buoyed by a 4.2 percent increase in valuations. Before getting the figures from Sedgwick County, city leaders had considered a tax increase for public safety based on an estimated small jump in valuations.
