Kudos to city council member After an enlightening Valley Center City Council meeting on May 2, I want to give kudos to city council member Al Hobson for abstaining on a council vote for another Valley Center Library Board member.

Food truck policies in Park City are dated Taylor Messick Due to an uptick in interest about food truck requirements in Park City, city staff will review the city's current policies. City Attorney Doug Moshier recommended some changes on May 9.

Man arrested after chase on I-135 The News staff Park City police pursued a white Chevy Impala south on the highway in search of a suspect thought to be involved in a larceny. The pursuit was called off, but Wichita police noticed the vehicle parked along the road. The suspect ran from the vehicle and was caught.

Schatz repeats with win at 81 Speedway Randy Fisher A near-capacity crowd watched the series defending champion and current points leader capture his eighth win of the season in the Kansas Outlaw Klassic, presented by Great Clips, Murphy Tractor and the City of Park City. He was first under the checker when the series was last here in 2006.

And the “Program" is for everybody to visit. We don't need special entertainment.

Golf team fourth at league Taylor Messick Valley Center High School has one of the top Class 5A golf squads in the state, but the Hornets had their hands full May 8 at the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II tournament at Quail Ridge in Winfield.

High-jumper signs with ESU Chris Strunk Runnion, who placed fourth at last year's Class 5A state meet and second as a sophomore after a sixth-place finish during her freshman season, said she chose Emporia State after visiting the campus and meeting the team's coaches and some of its athletes.

Hornets on a roll as postseason approaches Jeremiah Strunk The Hornets beat Salina South on May 4 and Andover Central on May 9, improving their record to 10-4-1, which is good enough to host a first-round regional game at 6 p.m. May 16. (It was not known at press time who the Hornets would play.)

Latimer breaks school shot put record in Derby Taylor Messick Taylor Latimer came up with another standout performance at the meet. She won all three of her events and broke the school record for the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 4 inches. The previous record of 43-6 was held by Meagan Williams since 2013.

Middle school track finishes season at league meet The News staff The Valley Center Middle School track team competed at the Prairie Hills Invitational April 27, at the Maize South participation meet May 1 and at the Bob Hoover Invitational in Andover May 2.

Three earn repeat trip to state tennis Randy Fisher At the May 5 regional in Newton, junior Garrett Rogers in singles, along with sophomores Hayden Brauer and Colby Swift in doubles, earned their second straight state berth. Rogers (26-8) was the runner-up, while Brauer and Swift (25-7) finished third.
