ALVIN JEANNERET Alvin Ray Jeanneret, 68, Valley Center, died April 20, 2017. He had lived in rural Valley Center for 38 years.

Time for double cemetery tax to end For the past 13 years — since the City of Valley Center opened its own cemetery north of the high school — property owners in the northwest part of the city have essentially been double-taxed for cemeteries, paying for the one in Sedgwick through a special tax that has been in place for decades and for the one in Valley Center through general property taxes.

Baseball team splits non-league games Randy Fisher After opening the season with six league games, the Valley Center High School baseball team stepped away from the league wars for the first time this season April 25. The Hornets split a triangular at Haysville, losing 6-4 to host Campus and run-ruling Wichita North 12-2.

Golfers second again at Auburn Hills Taylor Messick The Valley Center High School golf team is currently ranked fourth in Class 5A and had another successful outing in tough conditions on April 24.

Hornets 11-1 after sweeping Campus Chris Strunk The Valley Center High School softball team extended its record to 11-1 with a non-league doubleheader sweep at Campus April 25.

Hornets second at Topeka as they prepare for league Randy Fisher In their last competition prior to the May 1 league tournament, the Hornets placed second April 24 at the Topeka High Invitational. Prior to that, Valley Center hosted its own tournament April 22 and finished third April 20 at Salina South.

JV girls’ track team places fourth at McPherson Taylor Messick The varsity track team got rained out at Wichita Heights on April 21, so the team didn't have a meet this week. The meet at Heights has been rescheduled for May 1.

Maize South ends Hornets’ unbeaten streak Jeremiah Strunk During another three-game week for the Valley Center High School soccer team, the Hornets lost a home game against Maize South, 1-0, on April 25, ending a seven-game unbeaten streak. It was Valley's third Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II game of the season.

Middle school track team does well at home meets The News staff The Valley Center Middle School track team hosted a quad on April 18 and a participation meet on April 24.

VCHS Alumni Banquet set for June 3 Ron Black The first Saturday of June is early this year, coming at us on June 3! The plans for the 2017 VCHS Alumni Banquet are well underway, and it looks like another good time and good food fest.

VCHS students celebrate Art Day Taylor Messick Students got to have some fun and participate in art shows, workshops and competitions. Students also created a large art exhibit in the library to showcase some of their work. The categories of artwork included 2D, 3D, audio visual, charcoal drawings, computer graphics, graphite drawings, hand-built ceramics, mixed media, opaque paintings, pastel and color pencil drawings, pen and ink, photography, print making, sculpture, stone ceramics and transparent paintings. Some of the pieces have been in development for an entire year.

Police piecing together theft cases Chris Strunk Sgt. Lloyd Newman said this week that a possible suspect is in jail on an unrelated charge and detectives processed a recovered vehicle for fingerprints and other evidence. In addition, a stolen vehicle recovered last week in Wichita had a used syringe inside of it, which police collected for DNA testing.
