Bel Aire investigates water complaint Taylor Messick Pitschman showed cameras how the faucets in his home put out an undesirable water stream that contained visible black specks. He said he uses filtered water from his refrigerator to drink, but that the filters get expensive and he still has to deal with the dirty water when showering, brushing his teeth and cooking.

CAROLYN SCHWARZ The Rev. Carolyn Sue Schwarz, 60, of Bel Aire, died Dec. 1, 2016. She was the senior minister at Pine Valley Christian Church in Wichita.

HOYT SUNDERLAND Hoyt Sunderland, 78, died Nov. 27, 2016. He retired from Wichita West High School in 1998 as the director of counseling.

County closes Kechi bridge Taylor Messick The 61st Street bridge in Kechi closed for repairs on Dec. 5. The bridge — which is between Oliver and Woodlawn — is outdated, was badly damaged by excessive flooding in July and was recently deemed unsafe.

Hornets beat Cheney in overtime Chris Strunk Valley Center 2-0 with ‘huge' early victory
|
Hornets open season with second-place finish Jeremiah Strunk Under new head coach Tate Lowe, the Valley Center High School wrestling team opened the 2016-17 season with a second-place finish at the Valley Center December Duals on Dec. 3. The Hornets went 4-0 in pool matches but lost to Goddard 37-28 in the finals.

Middle school girls start season 5-7 The News staff The Hornets journeyed to Derby North Dec. 5, hosted Hutchinson Dec. 1 and traveled north to Salina South Nov. 29 to kick off the season.

VCHS intern of the month Abigail Sheahan Thayer interns with Koch Business Solutions as part of the landscape maintenance team. He has his own set of tasks to complete to make sure that the outside of the business is just as organized as the inside. A couple of his tasks include mowing the grass and helping take care of the sprinkler system.

Valley survives second-half charge Chris Strunk After leading by 20 points in the first half against Cheney in the first round of the Cheney tournament, the Hornets were outscored 22-7 in the third quarter and had to hold on for the 69-66 victory.

Road crew breaks gas line The News staff The company working on the reconstruction of Butler near Casey's in Valley Center struck a natural gas line Dec. 1. Crews called 911, and Valley Center firefighters were able to get the line shut down within minutes, Capt. Rob Tormey said.

Valley Center police chief resigns Chris Strunk City Administrator Scott Hildebrand told The News that Hephner called him Tuesday night and said he intended to resign. Hildebrand said he told Hephner to think about it further. Hephner met with Mayor Laurie Dove and Hildebrand again today, finalizing his decision.
