Church looking for singers to fill the tree The News staff
    Calvary Baptist Church in Valley Center had its first singing Christmas tree last December. The Christmas tree itself was painted by famous landscape artist Todd Matson, a Valley Center native. The tree consists of six levels and can hold 45 people. The light display is coordinated with the music.

Separate facilities for library, center
    Fear for my great-grandchild's safety as well as all the children of Valley Center has prevented me from contributing to the Community Center/library project. While I want both the new library and a better Community Center, I don't believe the current plan is the safest for the youngest of our community.

Miss Kansas visits Valley Center schools Taylor Messick
    Schoenekase is originally from Overland Park and attended Blue Valley West High School. At 22 years old, she recently graduated from the University of Arkansas, where she studied to become a registered nurse. Her motivation for entering the Miss America pageant is to raise enough scholarship money to go back to school to earn her doctorate degree.

Season winding down for VCMS volleyball The News staff
    With the season winding down, the Valley Center Middle School volleyball teams played in a triangular Oct. 3 against Maize South and Andover Central with both eighth-grade teams losing. Seventh-grade results were not available. Before that, the Hornets went up against Eisenhower on Sept. 29 with the eighth-graders winning and the seventh-graders losing.

    The Valley Center Middle School football teams split games with Goddard on Sept. 29.  The eighth-graders won and improved to 2-3, while the seventh-graders lost and fell to 0-5.
Valley Center tennis sixth at league meet Randy Fisher
    Ark City took the league crown with 34 points. Andover won the battle for second with 29 points, narrowly edging Goddard's 28 and Eisenhower's 27. Andover Central was fifth with 24 points, followed by Valley Center with 17 and Maize South with 15.

Record numbers at Lions Club Car Show Ron Black
    To say the 11th Annual Valley Center Lions Main Street Car Show on Sept. 30 was a success would be an understatement, as 125 entries lined the street down both sides of Main and down the center to boot. This breaks the record of participants, with 23 more cars than last year.
Roofing work continues in VC The News staff
    The City of Valley Center issued 75 building permits during September for a total valuation of $868,452. Of that number, 68 were for roofing. That brings to 290 the number of roofing permits issued in Valley Center in July (88), August (134) and September. The citywide roof damage stems from a mid-June wind and hail storm.
Two stopped for towing, arrested The News staff
    Two people were arrested in Valley Center Oct. 1 after officers stopped a truck for towing another truck with a rope in the 1000 block of East Fifth.
