Hornet golfers place 10th at Andover tournament Taylor Messick The Hornets' top performer was Erika Hoag. She shot a 110 to tie for 27th. Next was Hannah Arneson in 39th with a 118.

Hornet tennis busy as season picks up Randy Fisher It was a busy week for the Valley Center High School tennis team. The Hornets played at Hesston Sept. 20, hosted their own tournament Sept. 17, and then hit the road for stops Sept. 15 at Buhler and Sept. 14 for a makeup at Wichita Collegiate.

Hornets dominate Berean, lose at Salina Central Jeremiah Strunk The Valley Center High School soccer team beat Berean Academy 3-0 on Sept. 17, but fell to Central Sept. 20 on the road. The Hornets are 3-4.

Hornets sweep league tri, fourth at Maize Randy Fisher Playing its best volleyball of the season, Valley Center High School swept a league triangular Sept. 20 — its first in a year — and placed fourth in a tough Maize Tournament Sept. 17. The Hornets are now 12-13 overall and 3-2 in league play.

Middle school football teams split games The News staff The eighth-graders got their first win of the season with a 34-22 victory, while the seventh-graders fell to 0-3 with a 40-20 loss.

VCMS volleyball falters in league tournaments The News staff It was another busy week for Valley Center Middle School volleyball. All four teams played in triangulars Sept. 19 at Andover and Maize South. On Sept. 17, each “B" team played in its respective Pioneer League tournament.

Bus collides with deer The News staff A Valley Center school bus received minor damage when it hit a deer during a route Sept. 16. There were students on board at the time, but there were no injuries. All students were transported to school safely, the district said in an email to parents.

Teacher’s lawsuit disputes dismissal Chris Strunk The lawsuit by Janet Decker was filed in Sedgwick County District Court. It claims that the original Teacher Due Process Act, which was modified by the Kansas Legislature in 2014, should apply to teachers who were tenured before the changes went into effect.

Woman accused of hitting man with car The News staff Police responded to a disturbance in the soccer field parking lot at 700 N. Emporia. A 31-year-old man said as he was walking through the parking lot he noticed his ex-wife stop her vehicle behind him. He continued to walk, police said, and he heard the vehicle accelerating quickly. The vehicle struck him. He was not injured.
