    Charles Harry Eaton, 99, formerly of Bel Aire, died April 4, 2016. He was a former mayor and city councilperson for the City of Bel Aire.

    Dorsey Fife “Yo" Brown, 86, of Valley Center, died April 8, 2016. He was retired from Vulcan Chemicals.
ERMA ORTH-SCHUSTER
    Erma Orth-Schuster, 79, died March 31, 2016. She was retired as the co-owner of Pilot Financial.

    Lawrence Allen “Sonny" Bennett, 85, of Dallas, formerly of Valley Center,  died April 1, 2016.

    Lyndon “Bill" Swenson, 72, of Valley Center, died April 7, 2016. He was a retired millworker and lumber yard manager.

    Mildred Elouise Challis Grier, 88, of  Park City, died April 9, 2016. She was a former aviation instruments inspector.

    Rosann (Bergin) Harpster, 82, of Valley Center, died April 5, 2016. She was the founder and owner of Clearwater Trucking and Midland Refinery Company.
SUSAN SOUDER
    Susan K. Souder, 66, of McPherson, formerly of Valley Center, died April 5, 2016. She was a nursing administrative assistant at McPherson Hospital and a Mary Kay consultant.
ZELMA DAVIDSON
    Zelma Mae Knisley Davidson, 85, of Wichita, died April 5, 2016.  She was a former certified patient care technician.

School bond projects needed
    The project includes storm-safe shelters that double as multi-purpose space at Wheatland, the intermediate school and the middle school. It also includes a redesigned entry into Wheatland, a project that, unfortunately, was bypassed in the 2008 bond.

    Park City officials have had a number of domestic animal topics come before them, including keeping pigs and goats as pets. Now they have a new one: exotic animals, creatures such as anteaters, spider monkeys, lemurs, flying squirrels, marmosets and more.

    Adding to their work was a cold, windy day and while none of Valley's golfers placed in the top 10, the Hornets improved by 25 shots from their last outing, making coach Mike McCormick satisfied with the progress.

Hornets lose league openers on the road Randy Fisher
    After splitting a doubleheader last week, the Valley Center High School baseball team opened league play April 12 at Andover Central. The Jaguars, ranked fifth in Class 4A-I, swept the Hornets, rolling 9-2 in the opener before holding on for a 4-3 win in the nightcap. Valley is 1-5 overall and 0-2 in AVCTL II play.
Hornets tie for first at Andover, finish second at Campus Randy Fisher
    With 14 team points, Valley Center placed first in an April 12 quadrangular at Campus. The host Colts were second with 10 points, followed by Chaparral with 3 and Augusta 1.

    Valley Center High School senior Kelli Bright signed a letter of intent March 29 to join the rodeo team at Pratt Community College this fall.
Shelton turns team over to assistant Chris Strunk
    Shelton, head coach of the Valley Center High School wrestling program for the past 19 seasons, has resigned. He will remain a teacher at the high school, and he wants to maintain a connection with the program.
Sprinter returns to capture gold at home Chris Strunk
    On April 8, DeMarco King returned to the track after a long recovery from an ankle injury and won the 100-meter dash at the Valley Center Invitational.
Streak of dominance continues for Hornets Taylor Messick
    Only one game remains before the Hornets begin a stretch of six consecutive games against Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II opponents. Though the true test still lies ahead, the Hornets couldn't have handled their business much better through the first portion of their schedule.

    The Valley Center school board on April 11 accepted a proposal to close on May 17. Teachers' last day will be May 20.

    The Valley Center school district will offer a food service program again this summer. The meals are free to all youth.

2016 VCHS Alumni Banquet set for June 4 Ron Black
    The first Saturday of June is about eight weeks away and planning for the 2016 Valley Center High School Alumni Banquet is getting in gear. The Alumni Committee is encouraging the class coordinators to give their classmates a heads-up for this year's banquet, which is June 4. Reservation check-in starts at 5 p.m. at the high school commons room, 93rd North and Meridian, and dinner will start at 6 p.m.

    The Valley Center school district and the Valley Center Recreation Commission will host a community health fair from 1 to 4 p.m. April 18 in the north gym at the middle school, 800 N. Meridian.

    Valley Center firefighters responded to reports of two house fires last week. One caused minor damage. The other was a false alarm.

Woman arrested with children in vehicle Chris Strunk
    Amanda K. Seigle was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on charges of driving with a suspended license, DUI and three counts of DUI with a child in the vehicle. Her three children — 2-year-old son, 6-year-old daughter and 8-year-old daughter — were in the vehicle at the time of the stop. There were not in car seats, police said.
Woman found alive hours after falling into cellar Chris Strunk
    Ruby Kaelson-Pike, 95, was taken to Wesley Medical Center, where she is recovering from a head wound and surgery this week on her broken back.
