Hornets cap perfect season with title The News staff With 17 of 18 wrestlers medaling, the Hornets won the Pioneer League Division II wrestling tournament Feb. 12, finishing with nearly 100 points more than second-place Eisenhower.

Local Cub Scouts cross over The News staff Cub Scout Pack 494 hosted its annual Blue and Gold Banquet Feb. 28, recognizing John Cain, Chasen Crippen and Coulter Bachle, who crossed over to Valley Center's Boy Scout Troop 494.

Nine wrestlers awarded all-league honors Taylor Messick To say that the league was tough this year would be an understatement. Four of the top six teams in 5A state came from the AVCTL II, including Goddard, Ark City, Valley Center and Andover. Andover Central also placed eighth in Class 4A. The league also had 33 state placers, 12 state finalists and six state champions. Hornet coach Brian Shelton was honored by the nominations his team received, and believes this year might be the toughest the league has ever been.

Record-setter Competing in the Class 5A state powerlifting championships Feb. 27 in Goddard, Taylor Latimer, a junior at Valley Center High School, tied the 5A state record for bench press with a lift of 205 pounds.

School district creates opportunities to keep students learning during summer Chris Strunk The school board on March 7 approved a slate of summer learning opportunities, including a couple of new initiatives.

School district ‘Superstars’ recognized Chris Strunk In a program designed to recognize teachers and staff who provide outstanding service to students, staff and patrons of the district, assistant superintendent Mike Bonner announced that Randy Horn, John Dobson and Courtney Traxson were 2015-16 Superstars of the Year.

Football coach will be athletic director Chris Strunk In a move that raises questions of conflict of interest and workload, Smith, Valley Center High School's football coach for the past three years, will also be its athletic director and assistant principal this fall. The school board approved Smith's appointment March 7.

Forum with Huebert set The News staff Rep. Steve Huebert will host an open forum from 10 to about 10:30 a.m. March 12 at Valley Center City Hall to discuss legislative issues.

Police find no kid with gun The News staff Valley Center police received a call about a suspicious character March 3. Apparently, a kid was seen walking along Fifth Street dressed in all black with a gun in his right hand.
