    Mable “Ernestine" Hickerson, 98, formerly of Park City, died Jan. 10, 2016. She retired as a registered nurse from the U.S. Air Force in 1981.

    Mary “Louise" Richardson White, 89, of Valley Center, died Jan. 17, 2016.

    Michael “Nico" Christian Byington, 19, died Jan. 10, 2016. He was an employee of A.J.'s at the Alley.

    Roger L. Brooner, 87, of Sedgwick, did Jan. 24, 2016. He was a retired Boeing systems analyst.

Kechi considers ban on asphalt plants David Dinell
    After a community uproar last week in opposition to an asphalt plant being built near Kechi, the city council is considering banning them within the city limits.
Kechi gets new city council member  David Dinell
    Betty Washington has joined the five-member Kechi City Council. She replaces Deb Jacobs, who recently resigned for personal reasons. Washington was appointed by Mayor Ed Parker, who said he believes she will serve the community with dignity.

Hornets open Jam against No. 2 seed Randy Fisher
    This week, Valley Center High School will host its annual January Jam basketball tournament. The three-day event runs Jan. 21 through Jan. 23 and features three ranked teams. Wichita Southeast is No. 7 in Class 6A, while Topeka Seaman is eighth and Maize South 10th in Class 5A.

    The Society of Women Engineers and Spirit AeroSystems will host an Engineering Expo from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 20 at Century II Exhibition Hall in Wichita. This free event features hands-on activities for kids in grades kindergarten through eighth to learn how engineering relates to the everyday world.

    The Valley Center Middle School girls basketball teams traveled to Eisenhower Jan. 14 and split along grades. Eighth grade won both games, while the seventh-graders lost twice. The Hornets will host Andover Central on Jan. 21.

    Volunteers and Valley Center officials have taken steps in recent weeks to put the city's senior citizens organization on solid ground. However, some seniors still see the group's future as cloudy and are reluctant to embrace the changes.
