    Do-hee Lee won her third straight singles title and Bishop Carroll got a doubles championship in its second attempt at the Class 5A high school state tennis tournament Oct. 16 and 17 in Valley Center.
Competition heats up for Hornet runners David Dinell
    The competition was fast and their ranks deep at the Oct 17 at the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail Division II meet at Lake Afton. The Hornet girls had been hitting first place at a variety of meets earlier in the season, but the depth of competition at this meet took a toll on them, knocking them down to third place out of seven teams.

    Sophomore Rachel Binau and freshman Jessica Sharp in doubles, along with senior Carly Espinosa in singles, all exited the state tournament on the first day. Binau, who played doubles at state last year, and Sharp were 1-2 in their first state together. Espinosa failed to win a match in her first state meet.

    Barton Solvents Inc. agreed to pay $1.1 million in civil penalties and submit to a third-party audit to identify compliance with federal environmental and occupational guidelines involving the 200 explosion and fire at Barton's former Valley Center facility as well as an incident at its plant in Des Moines, Iowa, the same year.

    The Valley Center City Council on Oct. 20 voted to declare the burned-out mobile home at 212 S. Meridian Lot. 11 a dangerous structure, giving the city authority to tear it down if nothing is done with it.
