    Those prime conditions showed in the results, as most Hornets set either a personal best or season best with their times.

    The Hornets were fifth in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II meet. Their top placer was the doubles team of Rachel Binau and Jessica Sharp, who went 2-2 and finished sixth. On the singles side, Carly Espinosa (2-1) fought back from a tough first-round loss with a bye and two victories for ninth. Courtney Sayers and Jacque Toews (1-2) were 11th in doubles, while Elle Kabler (1-3) was 12th in singles.

    Playing without outside hitter Kyli Webber, who is recovering from a concussion, the Hornets split a league triangular Oct. 6 at Maize South. They lost to Andover 10-25, 29-31 before eking out a 25-17, 25-23 win over Maize South.

30 new duplexes underway in Valley Center The News staff
    The City of Valley Center issued 47 building permits in September for a total valuation of $2.3 million. Of that number, 31 were for new residences. Thirty of those were for duplexes on Redbud in the Ridgefield subdivision north of Fifth and east of Kessler.

Tenth Lions Car Show draws 102 entries The News staff
    Hundreds of spectators from all over the area enjoyed the free admission, weather and browsing among examples of rolling artwork. The competition for awards was fierce, and entrants agreed that every year this event gets better.

    Dennis Maley, who graduated from Valley Center High School in 1966, will discuss his novel for young adults, “Three Links of Chain."
