Honor doctors with life-saving equipment In recognition of Doctors Day, letters were mailed to the community asking for donations in honor of their personal physicians. This money does not go personally to the physicians but is matched by the hospital to provide AEDs (automated externally defibrillators) to schools and other public groups.

New coach guides Hornet baseball Randy Fisher The past five years have been tough ones for the Valley Center High School baseball program. Two coaches combined for 37 wins and 74 losses, while the Hornets have not won an AVCTL game in two years.

Strength in numbers for track team Chris Strunk Smith said the season started with 120 students out for track. There were 103 remaining last week.

Tennis looks to capitalize on depth, experience Matt Heilman Schulz said of the 45 players out for tennis this spring, the top 12 to 14 are on similar skill levels, which is making practices competitive.

Upperclassmen to lead Hornet golf team Matt Heilman The Valley Center High School golf team is hoping four upperclassmen can lead the Hornets to a goal they haven't reached since 2010, qualifying as a team for the state golf tournament. Four years ago, Valley qualified as a team in Class 4A.

Valley looks to build on success Randy Fisher Last year was a remarkable season for Valley Center girls' soccer. The Hornets won their first 20 games, including 16 shutouts, before falling in the Class 5A state championship game. Twelve Hornets were named all-league, with five on the first team.

Police investigate string of burglaries The News staff Valley Center police are investigating a string of vehicle burglaries that happened last week in the Prairie Lakes neighborhood.

State gears up for severe weather season The News staff We're almost through March and we haven't seen much in the way of thunderstorms, but that doesn't mean we'll be spared of severe weather this spring. Ahead of a severe weather safety class hosted by the Park City Senior Center, Park City Police Chief Phil Bostian and his department offer advice that can keep citizens safe in the event of a tornado or a severe thunderstorm.

Woman’s house a total loss Chris Strunk The residence, owned by Lois Black-Pianga at 329 N. Park, was destroyed when a grass fire spread to the home and caught the siding on fire.
