Kechi council exploring options for unsold lots Matt Heilman About six months ago, the City of Kechi acquired three lots in an attempt to recoup more than four years' worth of delinquent taxes. At a Feb. 27 workshop the Kechi City Council discussed the acquired properties and their uses.

Hornet senior to play golf for Bethel College Matt Heilman Valley Center High School senior Alan Joyal hasn't had an offseason. Joyal has golfed at the varsity level for his entire high school career. He's posted scores that have stood up with some of the top marks in the area and he's done so by continuing to compete after his high school seasons have ended. He's played tournaments in the summer and fall and is ready for a breakout season in his last go round at VCHS.

Hornets turn up intensity with win Randy Fisher Playing their last home game of the year Feb. 27, the Hornets showed there's still a lot of fire left in their eyes. Valley led from the get-go and rolled to a 57-31 league win over Maize South on Senior Night.

Valley ends regular season with a loss Randy Fisher Make it two straight for Maize South, as the Mavericks defeated Valley Center for the second time in a little more than two weeks. This time it was a 55-40 win on Senior Night, Feb. 27. Valley ended its regular season 7-13 overall, and 3-9 in league.

Business remodels in full swing Chris Strunk The City of Valley Center issued 12 building and roofing permits during February for a total valuation of $240,880. None was for a new residence. However, three were for commercial remodeling projects, a rare trifecta in Valley Center.

City hires public works chief Chris Strunk The city council on March 4 approved the mayor's appointment of Brent Holper, who will start with the city full-time on April 28.

Court ruling on school finance could mean additional funds for Valley Center Chris Strunk The court today announced it upheld the Shawnee County District Court three-judge panel's decision that school funding is not equitable across districts. It requires the Kansas Legislature to fund capital outlay and local option budget equalization by July 1.
