Northeast Magnet hosting dinner theater The News staff Drama students at Bel Aire's Northeast Magnet High School will perform a Valentine's Day dinner theatre show in the auditorium of the school located just northeast of 53rd North and Rock Road at 5550 N. Lycee. The show the students will perform is called “Almost Maine," a story comprised of nine scenes that take place in the mythical town bearing the show's title.

BV Northwest defends Jam title Randy Fisher As the top-ranked team in Class 6A — and defending state champs — the Huskies once again swept aside the field to capture their fourth consecutive Jam title. This time it was a convincing 75-56 victory over Wichita Southeast on Jan. 25. It was Blue Valley's fifth Jam title, tying Junction City for the most championships.

Eighth-grade girls move to 10-1 with pair of wins The News staff The Hornets will look to conclude the regular season on a strong note in the week ahead. Valley plays at Maize Jan. 30 and at Newton Feb. 3. The Pioneer League Division II tournament hosted by Andover Central is set for Feb. 8-13.

Grant makes creative opportunity possible Matt Heilman Organized into six groups throughout the classroom, Ackland's math students used laptops to program the robots' movements to make them complete trips around tables. Through trial and error, each team had to program its robot to travel the proper distance in a straight line, and then program the robot to turn, ultimately completing a path around the perimeter of the desk.

Hornet senior signs to play tennis at Bethel College Matt Heilman On Jan. 21, Baker signed a letter of intent to play tennis at Bethel College next season. The NAIA school located in North Newton is part of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. On the tennis court, the Thresher women have qualified for five consecutive NAIA national tournaments.

Hornet wrestlers struggle at Emporia Matt Heilman At the Jan. 25 Emporia Dual Tournament, the Hornets competed with a few of the stronger teams in the state, but weren't able to come away with a quality win.

Hornets hang on to beat Newton Randy Fisher After building a 15-point lead at halftime, the Valley Center High School boys' basketball team had to scratch and claw to hang on in the fourth quarter for a 44-37 win Jan. 28 at Newton. The Hornets improved to 5-7 on the season.

Hornets look to rebound Randy Fisher After losing its last three games, the Valley Center girls basketball team hopes to rebound this weekend in the 21st Annual Lady Cat Classic. The eight-team tournament runs Jan. 30 through Feb. 1 at El Dorado High School.

Junior varsity girls remain undefeated Randy Fisher The Valley Center girls' junior varsity basketball team ran its season record to 13-0 with three victories in the Wichita North JV Tournament Jan. 24-25. In winning their second straight tournament, the Hornets edged Campus behind Carryn Richter's 18 points, downed host North 48-41 with Taylor Latimer scoring 13 and Beth Reeves 12, and defeated Wichita Heights 33-28 as Emily Klusener scored 10 and Sammy Boese 8.
