Good faith shown in water conservation program It would have been nice if the recent rainfall could have been more spread out, but we're glad to be clear of the drought. Nevertheless, water conservation should remain a priority.

Thankfully, drainage fix is on the way for VC City engineers are designing the reconstruction of Meridian from Main to Ford. It will include an underground stormwater drainage system, which will make life easier for Valley Center drivers as well as business owners.

Some are turning their sprinklers off I couldn't believe all the times this summer I would see sprinklers going off during or after it rained. I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out how to turn off the sprinklers. It may be another thing to figure out how to reset the sprinklers so they don't come on three times a day.

Construction of Ditch Witch to start this month Matt Heilman Ditch Witch of Kansas, currently at 125th North and Broadway is moving to an eight-acre site just south of the Hartman Arena property near 77th North and I-135. Ditch Witch CEO Jake Sadler, who has a 50/50 share in the company with his father, Lenny Sadler, said plans call for construction of a 24,000 square-foot facility to serve as the hub for the company's regional operation. Plans call for equipment to be sent to the new site before it is shipped to Ditch Witch's other locations.

Fraud attempt made on Foley The News staff A fraud attempt was made on the Foley Equipment Co., but for now, it appears the attempt was futile. On Aug. 1, an employee with the company's branch at 1601 E. 77th North reported on behalf of the company that unknown suspect(s) had been manufacturing checks using the Foley Equipment name to make purchases off Craigslist and eBay in several states.

Park City clerk and finance director to retire at end of month Matt Heilman After serving almost three years as the city clerk and finance director for the City of Park City, Dennis Nichols is answering a higher calling. Nichols, 67, has accepted a ministerial position within his church where he will be working with the homeless population in downtown Wichita.

Spangles fire caused by AC The News staff The lobby filled with smoke, but no one was hurt and nothing was damaged on an Aug. 4 call for the Sedgwick County Fire Department at Spangles, 1023 E. 61st North.

Woman hurt in hit-and-run The News staff One woman was hurt in an Aug. 3 hit-and-run car wreck at 77th North and Broadway.

Former Hornet named Wild head coach Matt Heilman Paco Martinez paid his dues. Now, the 31-year-old Class of 2000 Valley Center High School graduate has the keys to the kingdom. Last week, Martinez was named as the next head coach for the Wichita Wild professional indoor football team that plays its home games at Park City's Hartman Arena.

City issues 20 permits in July The City of Valley Center issued 20 building permits during July for a total valuation of $1 million. Of that number, two were for commercial buildings and one for new residential construction. It pays to save water under new program Matt Heilman Recent rainfall has alleviated local drought conditions, but cities are still encouraging residents to be conservative with their water use. In June, the City of Wichita implemented a $1 million rebate program that offers incentives for conserving water.

No new taxes in city budget Chris Strunk A short Valley Center City Council meeting on Aug. 6 was filled with praise and thankfulness as the city adopted an $8.45 million 2014 budget that did not include a property tax increase.
