Park City church plans ministry for young, expectant mothers The United Methodist Church at Park City is working to establish a new ministry to reach out to pregnant women and young mothers in need. The ministry includes the opening of a pregnancy crisis center out of the church and a home for new mothers and infants called The Lifehouse.

District budget options are fair The school board last week waded through a list of proposed budget cuts and revenue enhancements to balance next year's budget. Cuts were balanced nearly down the middle with increased fees and taxes as well as reserve spending. That's the right way to do it.

‘Castro’ murder trial delayed for third time Matt Heilman Daniel U. Perez, who lived near 93rd North and Oliver under the alias of “Lou Castro," was scheduled to stand trial starting on May 31. The trial, initially scheduled to have started last July, has now been delayed more than a year.

Ditch Witch sets ground breaking for August Matt Heilman Ditch Witch CEO Jake Sadler, who has a 50/50 share in the company with his father Lenny Sadler, said plans call for construction of a 24,000 square-foot facility on eight acres.

Man sentenced in motorcycle death Matt Heilman Last April, 23-year-old Joshua L. Wynn of Park City was arrested on a warrant for first-degree murder in the Sept. 1, 2011, wreck that resulted in the death of 19-year-old Mallory Scofield of Wichita. Court records show Wynn pled guilty to face the alternative lesser charge of second-degree murder. He was also charged on two misdemeanor counts of driving with a suspended license and operating a motorcycle without a Class M license.

All-day kindergarten praised Chris Strunk Nine months after the Valley Center school district started all-day kindergarten, dozens of the district's youngest students graduated into the first grade with the ability to read and write full sentences, reinforcing to teachers and district decision-makers the value of the expanded program.

Free lunch, breakfast offered The News staff As part of a national summer food service program, the Valley Center and Wichita school districts will offer free breakfast and lunch during June and July to children ages 1 to 18. No questions asked.

Hornet basketball camps set for next week The News staff The Valley Center High School basketball program will host a team camp from 4 to 7 p.m. May 28 through 31 at the high school. Cost is $40. Participants can register the first day of camp. Call coach John Wetig at 708-0352 or e-mail john.wetig@usd262.net. The camp is for players entering the ninth through 12th grades.

The Citation Award is given to students who have completed all of the materials that are required in the Awana program, which is based in Streamwood, Ill.

City says it fixed service to westsiders Chris Strunk Residents in two west Valley Center neighborhoods say the city isn't providing services as it should. The city says it is. Now, the county commission will decide who is right.

Fire destroys rural mobile home Matt Heilman A doublewide mobile home was destroyed and a dog died in a May 15 fire in the 5800 block of East 109th North between Oliver and Woodlawn. The fire was reported shortly before 2 p.m. and the home was engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived on scene. Sedgwick Count Fire Chief Gary Curmode said a man lived alone at the home. He said the man's son sometimes stayed at the residence with him.

Police enforce seat belt use The News staff Buckle up. Valley Center police are looking for seat belt violators during the Click It or Ticket campaign through June 2. Sgt. Matt Vogt said police have the authority to stop vehicles if they see drivers or passengers not wearing seat belts.
