Bel Aire man honors survivor of 911 attacks Matt Heilman Although he was advised to stay where he was on the 84th floor, John Breen picked up his backpack and ran to the stairwell. As he rushed down the stairs, the building shook above him, 15 floors below where his office was located and his descent began.

First graduating class at NE high The News staff Students in the first graduating class of a high school in Bel Aire flipped their tassels and tossed their caps in the air at the May 13 commencement ceremony at Century II.

Kechi council shows support for businesses Matt Heilman The Kechi Chamber of Commerce is organizing an event to encourage its residents to discover the city's small, but vibrant business community. On June 14, the chamber is planning to offer a discount price to residents for a catered dinner at City Hall and tickets to a show at the Kechi Playhouse, which will kick off its 31st season as a live theater venue next month.

Wichita artisan finds right fit in Kechi development Matt Heilman Abbe Doll is a local artisan who, about two months ago, found the right place for “things to come in ugly and leave pretty." Doll, a Wichita resident who specializes in repurposing old pieces of furniture, has set up her workshop in 1,200 square-feet of a 2,400 square-foot building in Kechi's Artisan Lane Shops development owned by Richard and Cindy Wolf at the northwest corner of 61st North and Oliver.

SAFE program successful I would like to personally thank the three sponsors of the Valley Center High SAFE (Seatbelts Are For Everyone) program — Bob Kellet Insurance Agency, Halstead Bank and The Ark Valley News. Thanks to the sponsors, the program was a huge success and the safety of the high school students at Valley Center has increased with more seatbelts being worn.

Thanks for VC scholarship What a wonderful community I live in where volunteers come together to raise money to benefit education. Thank you to all who participated in and volunteered at the annual Valley Center Poker Tournament to raise money for the Valley Center Community Scholarship Fund. Electronics, tools and clothes stolen Matt Heilman More than $2,700 worth of electronics and clothing was reported stolen in a May 7 burglary in the 6500 block of North West Parkview in Park City. An unidentified suspect allegedly forced entry through the locked front door of the home between 6 p.m. May 7 and 1 a.m. May 8, taking an estimated $2,776-worth of property. Photos were taken at the scene and submitted as evidence in the ongoing investigation.

Park City supports plans for industrial expansion Matt Heilman Job growth, increased revenue for the city and an expanded tax base. The Park City council didn't make any guarantees these objectives will play out with the action the group took at its May 14 meeting, but the prospects are promising.

Bands complete busy semester Amanda Jolly and Jan Verboom Members of the Valley Center band program had a very busy spring. District-wide, we have an enrollment of about 400 students, grades five through 12. Students in our band program have the opportunity to showcase their talents in a variety of ways, from concerts, to solo and ensemble contests, to annual talent shows at the end of the school year. Let's take a look at what each school has been up to this spring.

Baseball team falls to Maize South Chris Strunk Valley Center fell to Maize South, 15-0, on May 14 in the first round of the Class 5A regional tournament in Maize. The Hornets finished the season with a 3-18 record.

District increases meal prices for 2013-14 Chris Strunk Elementary breakfast price increased from $1.30 to $1.35. Elementary lunch increased from $2.20 to $2.25. Intermediate school and middle school breakfast increased from $1.35 to $1.40 and lunch increased from $2.30 to $2.40. High school breakfast increased from $1.35 to $1.40 and lunch increased from $2.40 to $2.50.

Middle school does well at league track meet The News staff The eighth-grade girls, seventh-grade boys and seventh-grade girls all won team championships. The eighth-grade boys were third behind Andover Central and Goddard Eisenhower.

Season ends in seventh for Hornet softball Chris Strunk The Hornets fell to Goddard, 4-3, in the first round of postseason play in Great Bend on May 14, finishing their season 11-10.

Valley Center senior places 12th at state Randy Fisher After qualifying May 3 for the Class 5A state tennis tournament, held May 10 and 11 in Emporia, Dolezal thought whatever happened at state would be “icing on the cake." The icing on his tennis cake was a 12th-place finish.
