Time to cast vote on trail
    The city council on May 7 should approve a plan to install a nature trail and observation deck along the east edge of a portion of the wooded park. If done right and maintained well, the trail could benefit the entire community as well as the surrounding neighborhoods.

    U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) announced that Rachael DeGarmo of Valley Center is serving as a U.S. Senate intern in his Washington, D.C., office this spring.
Valley graduate wins real estate competition Matt Heilman
    Derek Hoetmer was caught off guard. He knew he and his group had done well, but he was pleasantly surprised when the announcement was made. Hoetmer, a Kansas State University graduate student and his team including his roommate at KSU, an architect from the University of Kansas and a University of Missouri-Kansas City business student won the annual Urban Land Institute Gerald D. Hines Student Design Competition.

Arrest made in death of Kechi doctor Matt Heilman
    On April 16, 24-year-old Cody Allen Fields made his first court appearance in the Sedgwick County District Courtroom of Judge Warren Wilbert. Fields is charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

    For the past few years, the City of Kechi has thought critically and had lengthy discussions about establishing a new identity for and expanding its business community. The city that was once proclaimed as “The Antique Capital of Kansas," is hoping to reinvent itself with an artisan identity.

    The Valley Center High School baseball team fell to 1-9 with two losses to Andover on April 19. The Hornets dropped a heartbreaker in the first game, 6-5 in eight innings, and fell 9-0 in the second.
