State stalling school funding
    Conservative Republicans, who control the Kansas Legislature, want to change the state constitution to limit the power of courts in Kansas. This effort, which has been brewing for some time, intensified over the weekend after a three-judge panel in Shawnee County District Court ruled that the state must boost its spending on public schools by $440 million a year.

    The City of Kechi isn't prospering, but its financial situation remains solid compared to where it was a few years ago. At its first meeting of 2013 on Jan. 10, the city council heard from Kechi City Treasurer Sally Lane who discussed the end-of-year budget for 2012.

Park City nears final decision on financing for baseball complex Matt Heilman
    The Park City council hasn't approved the financing, but the city took another step toward bringing a stadium and baseball and softball complex to town with a resolution approved at a Jan. 15 special meeting. The council approved a resolution determining the advisability of issuing taxable industrial revenue bonds to finance the acquisition, construction and equipping of the baseball and softball facility to be located on a flood plain north and west of 61st North and Broadway

English teacher wins Horizon Award Matt Heilman
    Brianna Reyes wasn't given an explanation for why she was called out of her classroom to Valley Center Middle School Principal Kent Hipps' office. When the eighth-grade language arts teacher stepped into the principal's office shortly after 1 p.m. Jan. 11, assistant principal Greg Leher, counselor Rob Glenn and Superintendent Cory Gibson greeted her.

School board to discuss rental of new facilities Chris Strunk
    After a brief discussion Jan. 14, the board directed Superintendent Cory Gibson to develop a proposal that would allow the public to rent the high school auditorium and gym as well as new baseball and softball fields, facilities that were part of the 2008 bond issue but have been reserved for school activities.
