The Valley Center High School football team fell to 2-6 with a 42-7 loss to Goddard Eisenhower on the road Friday (Oct. 22).

Valley Center trailed 14-0 before scoring a touchdown in the first quarter. Eisenhower (6-2) then scored 28 straight points to take control of the contest.

Eisenhower scored on its first two possessions of the game, including an opening drive of 15 plays (all running plays) and 80 yards. Taking advantage of an errant Hornet snap on fourth down that forced a short punt, Eisenhower used just two plays to score its second touchdown.

Valley Center answered.

Quarterback Hank Welu threw a bomb to Kade Wilson, who made an over-the-shoulder grab and ran in for the 72-yard touchdown.

Trailing by just a touchdown, Valley Center converted an onside kick and was in business again near midfield. But the Hornets were unable to convert a first down and stalled at their own 49.

Valley Center came up short again before the first quarter ended.

Both teams traded possessions until about midway through the second quarter when Eisenhower intercepted a Welu pass deep in Valley Center territory and returned it for a touchdown and a 21-7 lead.

Both teams traded empty possessions to end the first half.

On Valley Center's opening drive of the second half, Eisenhower took advantage of another errant snap on a punt and scored from nine yards out.

Eisenhower scored on its next two possessions.

Valley Center had 184 yards of offense. Eisenhower had 302. The Tigers had a stable of running backs, racking up 278 yards rushing.

Welu completed two passes for 81 yards. No Hornet rushed for more than 20 yards.

It appears that Wichita Northwest is Valley Center's next opponent in the Round of 32 on Oct. 29. The Grizzlies are 6-2 after a 61-40 win over Hays Friday.
