Strong winds caused about $500 damage at the Park School in the 100 block of South Park in Valley Center, when roofing on the north part of the building was ripped off. Pieces of the roofing were hurled against the building, resulting in three broken windows. All classrooms were able to be used despite the damage, according to superintendant John I. Sward.

Francis Burdette, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. O. Burdette of rural Valley Center, was chosen assistant editor of the Sunflower Yearbook at Kansas State Teachers College Emporia. Miss Burdette, a junior, was a member of the Home Economics Club, Collegiate 4-H, Student National Education Association and the YWCA.

Navy Data Systems Technician 1st Class Lawrence R. Hadsall Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence R. Hadsall of Valley Center, returned to his homeport on board the destroyer escort ship USS Cook after a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific. He participated in bination fleet training exercises in the Far East and on the way home helped host more than 13,000 visitors to the ship during good will stops in Australia and New Zealand. Hadsall was a 1963 graduate of Valley Center High School.

Valley Center Junior High School was preparing to present a Christmas pageant featuring vocal music and a reader's theater. Fifty seventh-grade vocal music students, 87 voices in the Hornet choir, five readers and 11 tableau characters would bring the Christmas message to the audience. The program was a joint effort of the speech department and the vocal music department of the Valley Center Junior High School. Coordinators for the program were Frances Sloan of the vocal music department and Mrs. Robert Bacher of the speech department.

Lisa Becker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Becker, was one of the top winners at the 32nd annual 4-H Achievement Banquet and Awards Program held at the Wichita Consistory. Becker was awarded a clock radio from the Downtown Kiwanis Club for being the top girl among the achievement winners.

Bob Jackson was the winner of The News' football picks contest but was unable to attend the Cotton Bowl game New Year's Day in Dallas, which was the grand prize. Since he could not attend, the second-place winner Steve Hiebert was offered the grand prize, and he accepted. Hiebert then offered his second-place prize of a radio to Jackson.

Cindy Dienst, daughter of Duane and Bella Sanders of Valley Center, represented Sedgwick County at the Talent Find contest at the Kansas Farm Bureau annual meeting in Topeka. She performed a vocal solo taken from the musical "My Fair Lady."

Tech. Sgt. Michael W. Dawson, son of William and Josephine Dawson of Valley Center, received the second award of the Air Force Commendation Medal at Sheyma Air Force Base Alaska. He was chief of security management with the 6981st Electronic Security Squadron.


30 years ago

Ron Meyer of Valley Center was nominated by the Central Missouri State University theater department to participate in the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship at the University of Kansas. A grad student at CMSU, he was nominated for his performance in "Noises Off." Meyer was a 1981 graduate of Valley Center High School.

Ron Schroeder, son of Arlo and Kathryn Schroeder of Valley Center, received his bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Minnesota. He was a 1976 graduate of Valley Center High School.


25 years ago

Greg Rosenhagen, a Valley Center High School math teacher and assistant football coach who played tight end for the Wichita Warriors football team, was the "guest of honor" at the Wichita Warriors 44-3 playoff victory over Amarillo at Sward Field. Although he caught one pass in the game, his best catch of the day came at halftime, when he was on the receiving end of a pie in the face.

Dee Toews Harris, a senior at Wichita State University, won the $700 Marie Graham Award from the WSU Department of History. Harris was a 1989 graduate of Valley Center High School. She was named a Kansas Honor Scholar by the University of Kansas Alumni Association and the Kansas University Endowment Association.


20 years ago

Josh Truman, son of Jerri and Wayne Truman of Valley Center, a standout receiver on Valley Center High School football, was selected to play in the 1999 Kansas East-West Shrine All-Star Game.

Staci Tallent of Valley Center received an Extraordinarily Talented award from David Pecha, chairman of the scholarship committee at Northwestern State University, Alva, Okla. Tallent was a freshman at the university and a 1993 graduate of Valley Center High School.


15 years ago

Jennifer A. Little, daughter of John and Connie Little formerly of Valley Center, received a faculty scholarship at Cedarville (Ohio) University. The one-time award ranged from $1,000 to $1,800 and was given to students with high ACT/SAT scores and a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA.

The Valley Center school board accepted Valley Center High School football coach Jon Bishop's resignation who stepped down. Bishop wanted to spend more time with his wife and their daughter, who was  born in October. Bishop would remain at Valley Center as a middle school social studies teacher.


10 years ago

Vicki Truman, of Valley Center, used her painting hobby to paint a Christmas tree ornament that ended up on the White House Christmas tree in Washington, D.C. First Lady Laura Bush had asked U.S. congressmen to invite an artist from their area to design and paint an ornament for the tree. Congressman Todd Tiahrt asked Truman to design and paint an ornament that would represent Kansas.

Kate Jacob took over the Sedgwick-Halstead Veterinary Clinic as the new vet. She was one of the valedictorians in the Class of 2000 at Valley Center High School. She attended the Kansas State College of Veterinary medicine in Manhattan, graduating in 2007. She was in practice in the Kansas City area for a year and a half before this opportunity allowed her to move back to her home area with a local practice.


5 years ago

Valley Center High School students were designing an experiment that would be launched to the International Space Station after being handed over to NASA. The school would host a watch party in the commons during the launch. The winning Valley Center team included Cole Klinkhammer, Wesley Crow, Sam Sheahan, Logan Burks and Garrett Chandler.

Jule Hazen, great-nephew of Al and Lavonna Hobson of Valley Center, competed at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas as one of the country's top cowboys. Hazen was ranked No. 5 in the world in steer wrestling. He won almost $15,000 for a pair of top-five finishes during the event
