A bedroom and its contents were destroyed in a midday fire at a Valley Center duplex Sept. 10. No one was hurt.

Fire crews were called to the home on the southeast corner of Fourth and Meridian about 12:30 p.m. by a passerby who noticed flames coming from the corner windows.

Chief Lonnie Tormey said firefighters were able to put out the fire and contain it to the bedroom on the northwest corner of the house. However, smoke caused damaged throughout the structure.

Bedding, a dresser and other contents of the room were destroyed.

One person lives at the residence, Tormey said. She was not home at the time. Though there was a report of two cats inside, the resident had apparently taken the animals with her.

It's unclear how the fire started, Tormey said. The state fire marshal's office is investigating.

The east half of the duplex was not harmed, Tormey said. The address of the duplex is 105 and 109 E. Fourth.
