It's open.

A year after a Newton couple bought the former Burger Hut building at Fifth and Meridian in Valley Center, The Hornets Nest Daylight Donuts opened Sept. 3 to a line of eager donut-loving residents.

The store was busy for hours.

"I didn't think we would have that much, very surprising," said owner Sophannarath "Pon" Toeur, who owns a similar restaurant in Newton.

It was Toeur's goal to open on the same day his son turns 1 year old. It motivated him to work long hours to finish the exterior of the building during the past few weeks.

The building underwent a total renovation.

One of the earliest customers Sept. 3 said he was pleased with the experience.

Steve McDannald of Valley Center told The News that he asked if the store had lemon-filled donuts. It didn't, but the staff took a donut to the back kitchen and made one anyway.

McDannald said his wife had an apple fritter, and he had a jalapeno cheese roll. Both received top reviews. McDannald went back the next day for another jalapeno cheese roll.

"I must admit, I was concerned when it was first announced that Valley Center was getting a donut shop," McDannald said. "Leeker's had great donuts, so I was concerned if Valley Center could support both."

Leeker's closed in April, and even though there are a stock of daily donuts at Kwik Shop, residents were eager for The Hornets Nest to open.

"It was wonderful to stand in line to support a local establishment," McDannald said.

Toeur was thankful for the crowds.

"Thank you so much for supporting us," Toeur said about his customers.

The Hornets Nest opens at 4:30 a.m. and serves breakfast and lunch.
