Irvana Sue Keagy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I.B. Keagy of Valley Center, received the Henry L. Doherty Educational Foundation scholarship award. This award was made to sons and daughters of Cities Service employees on the basis of outstanding scholarship achievement, citizenship, extra-curricular activities and need. Keagy planned to attend the University of Kansas and major in education.

Miss Jessie Carrothers, 85, died July 31, 1963. She owned the largest collection of pictures, papers and other information concerning the founding and early history of Valley Center than any other of the early settlers. Her father, George Carrothers, and his brother came to Valley in 1875 and settled just west of the Santa Fe tracks on the corner of what is now Main and Birch streets, and started Carrothers Bros. Grocery and General Store. The building also served as the post office for the area and a two-story addition on the back was their home where Miss Carrothers was born.

Navy Ensign Dennis W. Prothero, the husband of the former Miss Linda J. Bright of Valley Center, was designated a Naval Aviator and received his "Wings of Gold" during ceremonies in Corpus Christi, Texas. He completed more than a year of intensive ground and in-flight training and would be assigned to specialized advanced training.

Staff Sgt. William J. Grattan, son of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Grattan of rural Valley Center, received the U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal at Forbes Air Force Base, Topeka. He was cited for meritorious service while assigned at Da Nang Air Base, Vietnam. Grattan was a 1965 graduate of Sedgwick High School and attended Kansas State College.


40 years ago

The Bampots was an all-girl soft rock band founded in the Valley Center area and included sisters Kathy and Shari Kelley of rural Valley Center, Tami Schroeder of Wichita and Kim Qualls of rural Valley Center. The band was heading to Nashville to cut its first record. Shari Kelley said they got the band name from a pen pal in Scotland who said the word meant daft, silly, crazy or a practical joker.

The Rev. and Mrs. Clarence Borger and their son, Jim, traveled to Dallas to visit Mr. and Mrs. Bill Borger, son of the Rev. and Mrs. Borger. Bill and his wife Lori were performing in the theater productions at Six Flags Over Texas.


35 years ago

Troy Lanning, 12, son of Mike Lanning of Wichita and Judy Diedrich of Valley Center, competed in the Little League World Series in Cheyenne, Wyo. He played first base and outfield for Tested Tough, a team in the Wichita West Urban League.

Valley Center was preparing for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus train to pull into town. The walking of the animals from the train through Valley Center on to the Kansas Coliseum had become an annual event for people to watch.


30 years ago

David A. Mullinax, son-in-law of William T. and Lois Black of Valley Center, completed the Federal Aviation Administration's 11-week air traffic control basic screen and course at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City.

Pam Manning, daughter of Mac and Beverly Manning, was elected as Grand Worthy Associate Advisor at the 51st Grand Assembly of Rainbow Girls of Kansas. Manning belonged to the Wichita Assembly #3 of Rainbow Girls.


25 years ago

Aaron Nickel, son of Ron and Donna Nickel of Wichita and nephew of Connie Denny and Elsie Stotts of Valley Center, was the Junior Pro Bass Angler of the Year. He received a customized Matlic Red Rod made by David Green of Wichita. Nickel was involved in the Flint Hills Junior Pro Bass Club.

Dick Yarnell of Valley Center accepted the job of operations manager of the Wichita Children's Home in Wichita. His responsibilities included purchasing, facilities management, maintenance and transportation for the home.


20 years ago

Kathleen Wooten, daughter of Jack and Berniece Wooten of Valley Center, received her doctor of optometry degree from the University of Missouri at St. Louis. Wooten was a 1977 Valley Center High School graduate.

Matthew Decker, son of John and Kim Decker, attended a week-long future astronaut training session at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson. The week culminated with the campers flying their own space shuttle mission aboard the Falcon, the Cosmosphere's shuttle simulator.


15 years ago

Twenty-four thousand Westar customers in Valley Center and surrounding north Sedgwick County lost electric power from an early morning storm that produced straight-line winds of 75 to 80 mph that knocked down 18 poles along Interurban.

Kelly Davidson, general manager of Andale Farmer's Co-op, announced the closing of its Valley Center store. The elevator would be open seasonally for harvest, but the number of employees would be reduced.


10 years ago

Valley Center opened its first splash park at McLaughlin Park. The installation of the kid-friendly project drew lots of kids who enjoyed the water cannons, suit-soaking frog ring, two grids of holes shooting water into the air and one very large snake that hissed water beneath its beady blue eyes. Opening day drew about a dozen kids at the splash park.

Todd McKown, son of Ron and Terri McKown of Valley Center, signed a letter of intent to compete in track at Wichita State University. WSU assistant track coach John Wise was excited about signing McKown.


5 years ago

Clint Duarte, son of Steve and Tracy Duarte, joined the U.S. Army National Guard and spent the summer in training boot camp. He planned to take the Army's advanced individual training as an information tech specialist and to attend Wichita State University with the National Guard paying for his education.

Caleb Smith, son of former Valley Center High School football coach Mike Smith, was welcomed as the new head football, head track and assistant girls basketball coach at Valley Center High School. Caleb Smith held a bachelor's degree in secondary education from Kansas State University, and a master's degree in administration. He taught for five years at Derby High School. He graduated from Garden City High School.
