Looking Back Last Updated: July 26, 2018 55 years ago Carolyn Litsey and Donna Walno of Valley Center were in the cast for Shakespeare's “Romeo and Juliet," the final summer theater production of the year at the University of Kansas. Miss Lynnae Langhover, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Langhover of rural Valley Center, was crowned quarter horse queen of the rodeo at the Rodeo of the Ozarks in Springdale, Ark. She received a golden buckle with a queen's crown. She also won first place in the pleasure riding class while her brother, Rand Langhover, won second place. 45 years ago Lana May of Valley Center was the Kansas Pinto Horse Club Queen and third runner-up in the National Pinto Queen contest. Her father, Phillip May, won fifth place in mare halter class and first place in another halter class. He also took the prize for the grand champion mare. Robert L. Edwards, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Edwards, formerly of Valley Center, received a commendation for heroism along with his police partner. The two Oakland, Calif., police officers were credited with saving the lives of 10 people when they entered two burning buildings to lead the occupants to safety. Edwards was a Valley Center High School graduate. 40 years ago Denise Warner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Warner, was named to the KU honor roll for the spring semester at the University of Kansas. Warner, a junior, was enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Construction plans for the First Federal Savings of Newton, Valley Center branch, were announced by Marjean Davison, vice president for First Federal Savings. The 1,800-square-foot brick building would be on the northeast corner of Main and Meridian. 35 years ago The city of Valley Center hired Bob Countryman, 34, of Haysville, as the new third-shift police officer. He replaced Nick Kurt, who returned to his job at Cessna Aircraft. The Valley Center City Council approved the appointment. Jane Allen, daughter of Beth and Dale Allen of rural Valley Center, had the lead in the Abilene Community Theater's presentation of “Call me Madam." 30 years ago Kent Gerety, son of Charlie and Evelyn Gerety of Valley Center, received a golf scholarship, and Tonya Miller, daughter of Cindy and Marvin Miller of Valley Center, received a softball scholarship, both for the fall semester at Dodge City Community College. Lonnie Ruth, math and computer teacher at Valley Center High School, was among more than 480 Kansas teachers honored for their long-term teaching service by the University of Kansas School of Education. Also honored were Ross Hearn of Derby, former VCHS music teacher, and Marlin Duane Schrag of rural Valley Center, who taught in Wichita. Each of them had taught for 25 years. 25 years ago Don Fleury resigned after more than 12 years with Valley Center Police Department, according to City Administrator Bob Finkbiner. Fleury was the second officer to leave the department the past six weeks. Burger Hut in Valley Center stopped serving breakfast since Betty's Kountry Kitchen restaurant finished repairs from their fire and were opening for business again. Ron and Lydia Prichard, owners of Burger Hut, announced they were opening a new submarine sandwich shop in the 300 block of South Meridian named Subby's. 20 years ago Workers were assembling and pouring the concrete support stand for the new Valley Center water tower located on 77th North west of Meridian. City engineer Mike Schomaker told the city council that the project was on schedule for its planned November completion. Stephanie Ann Victory, daughter of Rex and Anita Victory of Valley Center, received a softball pitching scholarship from MidAmerica Nazarene College in Olathe. 15 years ago Keni Amodei of Valley Center, daughter of Wes and Alma Wolken, was chosen to receive a cheerleading scholarship at Barton County Community College in Great Bend. Kelsey Rexroat of Valley Center was chosen to receive a president's scholarship at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. A graduate of Valley Center High School, Rexroat was chosen based on class rank and SAT and ACT scores. The scholarship provided $28,000 for eight semesters. 10 years ago Deanna Patterson, daughter of Doug and Janene Patterson of Valley Center, accepted an $800 Hays City Silver Academic Award to attend Fort Hays State University. Patterson was a 2008 Valley Center High School graduate and planned to major in radiologic technology. Brandon and Valerie Ivey of Valley Center won $5,000 cash in the Kansas Lottery. The Iveys, who have two children, planned to use the winnings to purchase equipment for Ivey's storm photography and storm chasing hobby. 5 years ago Hayleigh Peterson, daughter of Charles and Marshella Peterson, competed in the National American Miss Jr. Teen Kansas competition in Wichita. Among the awards she received as a state finalist were the Spirit of America Award and the Portfolio Award. Nicholas Trombold of Valley Center was named to the honor roll in the School of Pharmacy for the spring semester at the University of Kansas. |
