The Valley Center High School Scholars' Bowl team started off 2018 right with a Top 10 finish at a 41-team tournament.

"I think it was because everybody on the team pulled their part," said Valley Center High School senior and team member Asa Unruh.

The team competed in the first flight of the Tournament of Champions at Bishop Carroll High School on Jan. 6 and placed first, going 4-0 in bracket play. The Hornets then went on to place ninth overall.

Team sponsor is Michael Moseley, who is a business teacher at the high school. The team competes in about seven tournaments throughout the year.

This was the team's first tournament of 2018.

"Being on the team was fun," said Unruh. "It's the best Valley has ever done."

This finish is something Unruh described as a great predictor for the future of the team.

"It was great morale boost for the Scholars' Bowl team and a good lead into the rest of the year," said Unruh.
