RILEY GREENWOOD

Riley MacGregor Greenwood, 59, of Valley Center, died Jan. 8, 2018. He had been a biology teacher at Valley Center High School since 1984.

He was born Dec. 17, 1958, in Medicine Lodge to Jack and Nancy (MacGregor) Greenwood. He grew up in Medicine Lodge and won the high school state championship in high hurdles his senior year in high school. He was a member of the Methodist Church. He was a scholarship athlete in both football and track at Hutchinson Junior College and was a football walk-on at the University of Kansas. He was a member of the Kansas chapter of Delta Chi fraternity. After graduating from KU with a biology degree, he married Diane Blurton in 1981. They moved to Valley Center where he began his teaching career. He was active in scouting and was recognized as Crew Advisor of the Year, Cubmaster of the Year, Scoutmaster of the Year and received the District Award of Merit. He participated in the Mountain Man program at Trappers Rendezvous for the last several years. He also taught anatomy at Hutchinson Junior College. In 2015, he was named the Valley Center Citizen of the Year. He was instrumental in establishing and coaching the Valley Center High School Clay Target Team as part of the Kansas State High School Clay Target League.

Survivors include his wife; son Riley Jack Greenwood; fur babies Snoopy and Lou; his beagles; and his mother and brother Jack Martin Greenwood, both of Aurora, Colo.

Viewing will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 11 at the Valley Center United Methodist Church, 560 N. Park Ave. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 12 at Pathways Church, 2001 N. Maize Road, Wichita. Burial will be Valley Center Memorial Cemetery, 9700 N. Meridian Avenue. Contributions to a scholarship fund for students in his name may be sent to Valley Center Community Foundation, Riley Greenwood Scholarship, P.O. Box 218, Valley Center KS 67147. Family contributions can be sent to any Emprise Bank. Baker Funeral Home of Valley Center has charge.
