Tough start for middle school boys basketball

It was a rough start to the 2017-18 season for the Valley Center Middle School boys basketball teams.

Through the first four games, the seventh-graders were winless while the eighth-grade “A" and “B" teams had three wins between them.

The teams played Salina South on the road Nov. 28, Hutchinson at home Nov. 30, at Derby North Dec. 4 and at Andover Dec. 7.

Eighth grade — The seventh-grade “A" team fell to Salina South 31-17. The Hornets fell behind 6-2 after the first quarter and trailed 13-6 at the half. Noah Simmons led Valley with eight points, while Isaiah Vaughn had four, Austin King two, Dale Petrie two and Kade Wilson one.

Valley beat Hutchinson in overtime, 53-50. The Hornets started strong with a 16-5 first quarter and led 24-10 at the half. But Hutch outscored the Hornets 31-17 in the second half to force overtime. Valley outscored the visitors 12-9 for the victory. Simmons led the way with 18 points. King added 12, Wilson eight, Dale Petrie six, Zach Romig four, Vaughn three and Cade Martin two.

Valley Center lost to Derby North 48-44. Valley led 19-14 at the half, but Hutch came back with a 34-25 second half. Wilson had 12 points, Vaughn 10, Romig six, Petrie six, Simmons four, Martin three and King two.

Valley Center lost to Andover 52-30. The Hornets led 13-12 after the first quarter, but let it slip away in the second and could never recover. Valley was outscored 29-13 in the second half. Wilson had eight points, Vaughn seven, Petrie seven, Simmons six and King two.

The “B" team beat Salina South, 32-14. The Hornets led 10-4 at the half and exploded in the second half with to finish on a 16-6 run. Eli Wilhite and Lejer McDaniel had eight points each, while Caden Schuessler chipped in a half dozen and Davin Schmelzle, Jacob Ranzau, Elai Alvarado, Donivan Hopewell and Ross Hankins had two each.

The Hornets fell to Hutch in overtime, 37-33. Valley led 12-5 after the first quarter, but Hutch came back to take a 22-16 halftime lead. After an even third quarter, Valley forced overtime with a 10-4 fourth-quarter run. The Hornets were outscored 7-3 in the extra period. Hopewell had nine points, McDaniel six, Ranzau six, Alvarado five, Alex Gillig four, Sam Bass two and Schmelzle one.

Valley defeated Derby North 29-22. Ranzau led the team with eight points. McDaniel had six, Alvarado five, and Schuessler, Schmelzle, Bass, Hopewell and Gillig two each.

Valley Center let a close game get away from it as it fell to Andover 36-18. The Hornets trailed by just five at the half, but were outscored 23-10 down the stretch. Ranzau had eight points, Gillig and Hopewell three each, McDaniel, Schuessler, Bass and Schmelzle two each and Alvarado one.

Seventh grade — The seventh-grade “A" team couldn't slow down Salina South's tempo and fell 53-10. Valley trailed 30-8 at the half. Eli Lefto had five points, Ashton Molello three and Caleb Saner two.

Valley kept things close with defensive rebounding in the first half, but couldn't stop Hutch when it started hitting from the outside. Valley lost 41-15. The Hornets trailed by just four at halftime, but were outscored 28-6 in the second half. Lefto finished with six points, while Jacob Rutschman had five and Brayden Boone and Braden Rios had two each.

Valley Center had trouble against the Derby North pressure defense and couldn't get anything going offensively, falling 61-8. The Hornets trailed 36-8 at the half. Lefto and Max Preheim had three points each, while Reeves had two.

Andover was too much for the Hornets. Valley was outscored 22-4 in the first quarter on the way to a 52-9 loss. Rutschman had seven points and Lefto two.

The seventh-grade “B" team started tentatively and couldn't overtime Salina South, losing 21-15. Braden Rios and Cooper Reeves had four points each. Joshua Hailey added three and Molello had two. Mason Ehrstein and Camden Waterson had one each.

Valley Center lost to Hutchinson 40-19. Waterson, Molello and Caleb Saner had three each. Hailey, Jacob Kasselman and Avry Lewis had two each. Rios and Logan Davis had one each.

Valley Center forced overtime with a 14-10 fourth-quarter run, but a final shot in the extra period was too strong as the Hornets lost to Derby North 42-41. The Hornets were down by 10 points with less than three minutes remaining in regulation. Waterson, who had two 3-pointers down the stretch, finished with nine points. Saner had 10. Davis also had nine, Molello seven, Tommy Spratt four and Lewis two.

Valley struggled against the press and fell to Andover, 54-12. The Hornets trailed 33-5 at halftime and were outscored 14-3 in the third quarter. Saner had four points, Waterson three, Davis and Molello two each and Arec Jayne one.
