Valley captures third Colby title
By Jeremiah Strunk
Last Updated: December 14, 2017

The Valley Center High School wrestling team had a busy but successful week.

The Hornets beat Goddard Eisenhower in a dual Dec. 7 and defended its title, winning for the third straight year, at an invitational tournament at Colby Dec. 8 and 9.

“I think we wrestled really well," said head coach Tate Lowe. “Overall, our whole team battled the whole weekend."

Valley beat Eisenhower 48-29. Valley started with freshman Ben Carver at 106 pounds. Carver lost his match 12-1, giving Eisenhower an early four-point lead.

Valley won at 113 pounds with Alyeus Craig pinning his opponent just before the four-minute mark. After Valley's second loss at 120 pounds with Carter Nold, the Hornets went on a five-match streak with Mike Turkali, Eli Clouse, Devin Gomez, Dallas Boone and Brantly Loibl all pinning their opponents.

Valley went on to win three of its last sixes matches, gaining an additional 17 points to win 48-29 over Goddard-Eisenhower.

After the Eisenhower dual, Valley went to Colby for an invitational the next day. The Hornets were able to defend their title by winning a tiebreaker with the Monarch Coyotes. Valley dueled against seven teams, including Hays, Tonganoxie, Eaglecrest, McPherson, Blue Valley North, Hutchinson and Monarch.

“We wrestled very well, we got to see a lot of teams that we don't normally see and I think we responded very well," said Lowe

Valley's first dual was against Hays, which the Hornets won 62-15. Valley won every weight class except at 106 and 280. Valley was also forced to forfeit at 220 pounds, which set it back during the invitational.

Valley was just as successful during its second dual against Tonganoxie, which the Hornets won 44-27. At 113 pounds, Craig was given the award for fastest fall in pool after a 27-second pin.

After Tonganoxie, Valley went on to duel Eaglecrest, which it dominated 63-18. The Hornets were able to get a pin in eight of their 14 weights.

Round 4 for Valley was against McPherson. The Hornets were able to come on top, even after having a little trouble at the beginning of the match. Valley won 45-33.

After defeating McPherson, Valley's fifth dual was against Blue Valley North, which the Hornets had no trouble defeating 66-18. The Hornets took 11 out of 14 weights, all of them either by pin or by forfeit.

The Hornets had no trouble defeating Hutchinson 39-25, but Monarch posed a threat to their title.

The Hornets and the Coyotes remained evenly matched throughout most of their rounds, but Valley began to trail going into 195 pounds, where Xavier Schechter needed at least a major decision to have a chance to tie the round. Schechter was leading by a point going into the third period, but was able to secure a 12-point victory, leaving the Hornets down by six team points. At 285 pounds, Tony Caldwell got the job done by quickly pinning his opponent in the first period, tying the match at 37. The dual came down to the seventh criteria for determining a tiebreaker, which is each team's first points scored in each match. Valley won by a narrow 8-6 victory, securing first place.

Tyler Boone finished undefeated, and was awarded the upper-weight outstanding wrestler of the tournament.

Up next, Valley will host Maize South in a league dual Dec. 14 and will compete at a Bishop Carroll tournament Dec. 16. The junior varsity squad will be at a tournament in Rose Hill Dec. 16.
