Sixth grade

The sixth-grade Valley Center Junior Hornet football team captured the Andover Bowl tournament title this weekend, finishing the season on a high note.

The Junior Hornets entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed and had a first-round bye. Valley Center beat Andover II, 28-13, on Nov. 4 and beat Augusta, 19-6, for the championship Nov. 5.

Travis Ruth was named the championship game MVP.

“Everything was clicking for our boys this weekend," said assistant coach Nick Lewis. “Defense was lights out and our offense ran smoothly with very limited mistakes. … Coach Troy Emig addressed the life skill of adjusting to change when we asked the boys to play a different role than they were used to and overcoming adversity. We couldn't be more excited to watch these boys grow into great young men."

The Junior Hornets started the season 2-2 and ended with five straight wins, including two shutouts.

“I have coached this team since second grade and it brings a smile to my face when I reflect back on our start and how far we have come," said head coach Dan Welu. “I couldn't be prouder of these boys and how they played this season. They played with a lot of heart this year and truly learned how to play for each other as a team. Football is a big commitment and I would like to thank all the players, coaches and parents for their dedication over the past five years. It's been a fun ride and I look forward to being in the stands next year cheering on the boys as their journey continues."
