Kadin Pearson tackles Andover running back Chase Gummeringer.

HORNET FOOTBALL: Valley falls to Andover
By Chris Strunk
Last Updated: October 26, 2017

Midway through the third quarter, at least one Andover High School fan wondered: “Can we play them again?"

He got his wish.

Valley Center was roughed up by Andover Friday (Oct. 20), and now the Hornets will face the Trojans again in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs Oct. 27 at Valley Center.

“We're going to play," Valley coach Caleb Smith said. “It doesn't matter who it is. We're going to enjoy it, and we're going to do our best. … It's tough to beat teams twice, so hopefully we can use that to our advantage."

The Hornets fell behind early and could never recover against Andover.

The Trojans built a 21-0 first-quarter lead and extended it to 34-0 at halftime.

Andover led 41-0 before Valley Center got on the board in the third quarter with a six-yard touchdown run by Larry Wilson. Wyatt Lange connected with Wilson for a 57-yard touchdown pass to cut Andover's lead to 41-13, but Valley could get no closer.

Freshman quarterback Eli Fahnestock ran for three touchdowns and passed for three. He completed 12 of 22 pass attempts for 311 yards and rushed for 52. Andover's wide receivers picked apart the Valley Center secondary, turning short passes into long gains and touchdowns.

Andover coach Cade Armstrong said it was Fahnestock's best performance of the season.

The Hornets turned the ball over on its first possession.

Valley had four chances inside the Andover three in the second quarter and couldn't score.

Andover's blitzing defense plagued Lange and Parker Schrater all night.

The Hornets were able to stop just two of Andover's seven first-half possessions.

It was Valley Center's third straight loss after starting the season 5-0.

Andover improved to 4-4.
