Looking Back Last Updated: October 19, 2017 50 years ago Army Spc. 5 Gary L. Freed, 21, son of Mrs. Doyle Eaton, of Valley Center, received the Good Conduct Medal for exemplary conduct, efficiency and fidelity in active military service. Freed was a radar operator assigned to Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion of the 2nd Armored Division's 66th Armor at Fort Hood, Texas. Valley Center police called public attention to the fact there was a two-hour parking limit downtown. Merchants and police did not want to offend customers, but were asking for their cooperation in fairness to those who found it difficult to find a place to park. Employees and storeowners found off-street parking to make more downtown spaces available. 45 years ago Jan Wahl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wahl of rural Valley Center, sold mums for Parent's Day at K-State. Wahl was a member of Mortar Board and a senior women's honorary. Patricia A. Emler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Emler of Valley Center, had a supporting role in the Kansas State Teachers College Emporia's production of “Little Mary Sunshine." This production would also represent the college during a USO tour at military installations in Europe. 40 years ago Navy Aviation Machinist's Mate Airman Recruit Thomas R. Dawson, son of Mr. and Mrs. William C. Dawson of Valley Center, completed the Aviation Machinist Mate's Basic Jet Engine Course. He entered the Navy after graduating from Valley Center High School in May 1977. A new building, housing a members-only club and a public restaurant, was under construction for the Wichita Area Fraternal Order of Eagles. The announcement came from Lyle Blue, chairman of the Eagles' board of trustees. It would be located near 69th North and Broadway. 35 years ago Army Pvt. Randy Long, son of Carl and Marie Long of Valley Center, completed One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at the Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Ga. OSUT was a 12-week period which combines basic combat training and advanced individual training. Long gradated from Valley Center High School in 1982. Brent Henry, 10-year-old son of James Henry of Maize, ran in the KAKE-TV marathon. Brent Henry finished the 26.2-mile marathon in 3:29:06, while his father paced him on a bicycle. 30 years ago Jeff Eastman, son of Harold and Carolyn Eastman, and Randy Weber, son of Franklin and Shirley Weber, performed in the opera, “Sweeny Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," at Wichita State University. Both were graduates of Valley Center High School and seniors at WSU majoring in music education. Michelle Lacy, Stephany Willis and Kim McChristian, all of Valley Center, were attending Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo. Lacy, daughter of Donald and Kay Lacy, was majoring in business administration. Willis, daughter of Noel and Gayle Willis, was majoring in communications. McChristian, daughter of Rod and Loretta Spreier, was undecided on a major. 25 years ago Country music singer Garth Brooks visited Jamie Zackula while she recovered in the hospital following surgery for a brain tumor. Brooks visited Zackula after KFDI operations manager, John Speer, asked Brooks to call her after he finished a performance at the Coliseum. Instead, Brooks visited her at the hospital and gave her two T-shirts. He, his band and the Zackula family posed for pictures with Jamie. Aron Dunn, son of Dick and Cindy Dunn of Valley Center, was awarded the Jacquelyn Straub, Hazel Williams and Raymond Russell scholarships for outstanding academic students. He was a sophomore at Emporia State University. 20 years ago Chad Dawson, a student in Arlene Gordon's second-grade class at West Elementary, gave a pumpkin to every member of his class. Dawson grew the pumpkins in his garden. The Methodist church received a shipment of nearly 3,000 pumpkins to sell at its Pumpkin Patch. Each pumpkin had to be rotated daily, and workers stayed overnight in a camper in the parking lot to help prevent vandalism. 15 years ago Tara Doerfler was crowned homecoming queen, and Adam Snider was homecoming king during a VCHS football game. Other candidates were Shandelyn Timmermeyer, Lana Litzner, Landon Bevan and Garrett Konen. Mennonite Housing was seeking families to help with construction of six houses near Third and Emporia in Valley Center through its Mutual Self-Help Program. Seventeen local families had participated in similar projects in Valley Center on Meadow Road, Fifth Street, Interurban and Scott Street. 10 years ago Page Miller and Carey Crum repeated as Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division II cross-country champions at Lake Afton. Park City was reeling from business closures that included Optima Bus, Wild West World and the Greyhound Park. The Wink Hartman Sr. arena project also looked like it would falter when projected building costs ballooned from $15 million to about $25 million. 5 years ago The Park City Council decided to close the swimming pool in Hap McLean Park for at least one year. The city was facing a shortfall of about $776,000, primarily because of delinquent special assessments on undeveloped residential lots. The Moving Wall, a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. was on display at Lions Park. U.S. Congressman Mike Pompeo spoke during opening ceremonies, and Mayor Mike McNown welcomed the crowd. |
