Valey Center Lions Club treasurer Charlie Davis (right) and president Jim Gregory surprise Passageways CEO Jennifer Garrison with a $500 donation. Highlights Last Updated: August 17, 2017 Two Butler Community College art students — Hunter Garrett and Shelby Robertson, a graduate of Northeast Magnet High School in Bel Aire — were commissioned to paint a mural in a renovated classroom at BCC. The renovation — which is designed to engage students — includes new furniture, windows and carpeting, along with the mural. A grant from the Butler Foundation to the Humanities Department paid for this project. Garrett and Robertson were commissioned from the grant to paint the mural. They were given the freedom to create whatever they thought best. ††† Chase Johnson and Molly Wierman, both of Wichita, were named to the spring 2017 dean's list for earning a semester grade point average of 3.5 or higher at the University of Dallas. ††† The Valley Center Lions Club donated $500 to Passageways. During the club's Aug. 10 meeting, club president Jim Gregory and treasurer Charlie Davis presented Passageways CEO Jennifer Garrison with a check. Passageways provides suitable housing options to veterans with support services to maximize their available benefits. The organization works with single male veterans at the present time but hopes to be able to help all veterans who feel "lost in the system." The Living Center provides them with the tools they need to succeed. Each individual who goes through the program sets goals and is provided with opportunities to meet those goals. Passageways' services are coordinated through the Veterans Administration, Salvation Army and Catholic Charities to provide a hand up instead of a handout. Passageways is 100 percent privately funded and depends on donations from individuals and organizations. This is one of several services that the Valley Center Lions Club supports in Valley Center and the surrounding community. |
