From the library By Janice Sharp, director Last Updated: May 18, 2017 Library still needs your donations to reach fundraising goal We discovered in late January that some donations had been included twice in our Friends fundraising totals. Since that time, the records have been reviewed by Boyd Accounting, the city treasurer, the city financial officer and the city auditors. We had new pledges last week that now bring our fundraising total to $1,036,803.25. Based on that amount, we still need to raise $68,196.75 toward the total goal of $1,105,000. Several individuals are considering pledges at the current time. The Friends would appreciate any additional pledges and donations to complete the fundraising campaign toward the new community facility. Presentations are being made to students at Abilene and Wheatland elementary schools this week about the upcoming 2017 Summer Reading Program "Build a Better World." Reading logs, registration forms and guideline sheets are available at the library. Children going into second grade this fall are encouraged to read a minimum of 25 books. Children in third grade and above are encouraged to read a minimum of 25 hours. The deadline for turning in reading logs is 2 p.m. July 22 to qualify for prize bags given at the completion party at the Valley Center Swimming Pool on July 26. If logs are returned after the deadline, no prize bags are given. The reading program begins June 7 with Happy Faces. Performances will be at 9 and 11 a.m. at Le Venue. Participants enjoy the performer, make several crafts and then are given cookies and lemonade when leaving. The June 14 sessions will feature the Story Time Ladies from Goddard presenting "A House for Hermit Crab." We will once again hold a Park Walk June 21 at McLaughlin Park with a Touch-A-Truck. The Walk will have craft stations, fruit and water stations and games beginning at 9 a.m. Be sure to plan to attend the band of the 35th Infantry Division of the Army National Guard on June 15 at Le Venue. Lunch will be provided for $5 each or you can bring a sack lunch. Lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the brass and woodwind quintets performing during lunch. The band tours for two weeks in June in different areas of the state each year. We are beginning our Tribe events for students in fifth through eighth grades with a Schools Out Party from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 2. Tribe events will also be held June 16 for the game Escape the Room and again on June 30. Our first adult event will be at 6 p.m. June 23 for the adult game Escape the Room. Summer movies will be shown each Thursday at 11 a.m. beginning June 1. Children age 8 and under must be accompanied by a responsible person at least 12 years of age. Popcorn will be served once the movie has started. Check our website for a complete list of movie titles. Summer story times begin at 10:30 a.m. June 7 for children up to 8 years of age.
