Kechi council OKs Baird Street project By Taylor Messick Last Updated: May 18, 2017 On May 11, the Kechi City Council unanimously approved an engineering agreement with PEC for a Baird Street improvement project. Baird Street runs parallel to Kechi Road behind The Methodist Church. The two and a half block street is in a residential neighborhood and has been in desperate need of repairs for years. City Administrator Bob Conger said the city is now finally in a position to start the project. "We found out the base of the street was bad several years ago," said Conger. "Our budget hasn't been such that we could afford to fix it. Fortunately, the mill levy increase we received last year that we wanted to dedicate to streets has provided enough funds that we can pay cash for this rather than going into debt." The top estimate for the total cost of the project comes in at just under $350,000. PEC gave that bid two years ago and because bids for street projects have been so competitive lately, the cost is expected to be lower than the original estimate. If the costs are low enough, Conger said the city will use the savings to pay for the city's second highest prioritized street project — the re-sealing of Prairie Creek Drive. The Baird Street project is tentatively scheduled to begin in August and will not affect the Kechi Fair. |
