The Hornets celebrate an Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II title.

Hornets defend league track title

On May 12, the Valley Center High School track team competed in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II meet at Maize South. The boys won the meet for the second straight year and the girls placed fourth.

"Any time a program can accomplish something like this, it's a tribute to the effort the athletes put forward," said coach Troy Emig. "The meet was within one point heading into the 4x400.  (They) did exactly what they needed to in order to win the meet for us. We had several competitors on both the girls and boys that competed at a very high level."

The Hornets had several gold medalists at the meet. Keyon Saunders won the 100 with a time of 10.82 seconds (his first sub-11 time this season) and the 200 with a season-best 22.09 for the boys. Wyatt Lange won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a 40.18.

The 4x400 team of Thayer Terwilliger, Saunders, Larry Russell and Lange took first with a 3:27.83, which clinched the team title.

Tyler Brown won long jump with a distance of 21 feet, 5 inches.

On the girls' side, Madison Runnion won high jump with a height of 5 feet, 3 inches. Taylor Latimer won shot put with a toss of 44 feet, 1.5 inches; she also won discus at 143 feet, 11.5 inches.

The boys got a second-place finish out of Kory Martinez in the 200. He had a time of 23.06. Russell was second in the 400 with a time of 50.84. Zach Williams was second in the 110-meter hurdles with a 15.30; he was also second in long jump at 21 feet, 3 inches.

Brown was second in high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 2 inches; he was also second in pole vault at 12 feet, 6 inches.

Emily Klusener was second in shot put for the girls with a throw of 37 feet, 7 inches. Latimer was second in javelin at 131 feet, 9 inches.

The girls' 4x800 meter relay team took third with a time of 10:34.17. The team consisted of Sophia Neal, Madison Breault, Holly Smith and Karli Elsner.

Klusener was third in discus at 122 feet, 8.5 inches. Libby Schurle was third in javelin at 120 feet, 6 inches.

Brent Aamodt was fourth in the 800 for the boys with a 2:05.47. Lange was fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a 16.60. Williams was fourth in the 300 intermediate hurdles with a 43.14. Brown was fourth in triple jump at 40 feet, 1 inch. Patrick Gillen was fourth in discus at 121 feet. Aaron Coash was fourth in javelin at 154 feet, 3 inches.

Lydia Smith was fourth for the girls in the 100-meter hurdles with a 16.97; she was also fourth in the 300 hurdles with a 50.17. The 4x100 meter relay team of Kenisa Meyer, Kenna Meyer, Smith and Kristina Lay placed fourth, as well.

Valley Center will compete at a 5A regional May 19 at Goddard District Stadium.
