The View from Sunflower Gardens By Marilyn Bentley Last Updated: May 18, 2017 So far, no drought in Kansas "In time of silver rain, the earth puts forth new life again. Green grasses grow and flowers lift their heads, and over all the plain the wonder spreads." — Langston Hughes This is a very unusual year when there is no drought in Kansas. So much rain, even snow. An unusual spring — cool and wet. A few storms; farmers of northwest Kansas concerned about their wheat crop. We pray for all our farmers and ranchers and their economy. Here at Sunflower, we like our Monday coffee chats, Tuesday Bible study, game nights, van trips, potluck dinners and special events. We enjoy Nancy's piano concerts and chats about the composers. We like our Friday hymn sing-alongs and Mennonite singers. Thanks to all our gardeners and recent rains, our entryway flowers are pretty and full of surprises. We like the walk around the north building. Many enjoy doing jigsaw puzzles, which we frame for hallway walls. Our very own art. Many use our library for a variety of books to read. Some like mystery, or history, or the Oregon Trail stories and romance books or nonfiction. Some folks enjoy visits of family. In Kansas, we enjoy the wildlife. We have buffalo preserves. Coyotes, bald eagles, loons, and rabbits, squirrels, friendly birds and our pets. They all make life interesting. Most of our Kansas rivers are full now and join places in the Midwest which are flooded. We pray for all our troops and their families, wherever they are. Verse of the week: "Grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and savior, to him be glory now and forever." (2 Peter 3:18) Folks here continue to enjoy our Kansas restaurants, malls, farms, and ranches, local newspapers and one another. Welcome, welcome to all new residents. Many here enjoy visits to the museums of Kansas. Some have enjoyed seeing the Cosmosphere. I also like visits to Botanica (ever-changing) and the art museum and a fun time at Cowtown. Soon our grandkids will be out of school for the summer. So graduations have come and gone, with weddings in our future. We continue to pray for our country, our Congress, our troops, all collegians and kids on bikes. We note this area has ongoing road repair. We like our new sidewalk. We know the Kansas motto is true: "Ad Astra per Aspera" — "To the Stars through Difficulties." "O give me a home where the buffalo roam … and the skies are not cloudy all day." — "Home on the Range" (Kansas state song) Remember: "Be kind, anyway." — Mother Teresa |
