A dozen qualify for state wrestling

Valley Center High School will send a dozen wrestlers to the Class 5A state wrestling tournament Feb. 24 and 25 at Hartman Arena in Park City.

The Hornets finished third as a team at a Class 5A regional tournament Feb. 17 and 18 in Goddard.

Hornets who qualified for state were Quentin Kirk (106), Carter Nold (113), Mike Turkali (120), Devin Gomez (126), Dallas Boone (138), Don Boone (152), Tyler Boone (160), Payton Stoffel (170), Kaden Lewis (182), Sam Weldon (195), Chase Holle (220) and Tony Caldwell (285).

"Qualifying 12 out of 14 was a great accomplishment for this team," said coach Tate Lowe. "We were close to getting all 14 in, but all the guys, from JV to varsity, are the reason we were as successful as we were last weekend."

Kirk, a freshman, started the tournament with a first-round pin. He lost by technical fall in his second match. Kirk went on to win three more matches, but was defeated by Jason Henschel from Goddard in his fifth-place match. Kirk placed sixth.

At 113 pounds, Nold received a bye in the first round and was victorious in his second match. Nold was defeated in the semifinals by Christian Robinson from Arkansas City. Nold then won his next match and his third-place match.

This will be Nold's third trip to the state tournament. The junior has yet to place.

Turkali wrestled for Valley at 120 pounds, and his matches went in a similar fashion. Turkali received a bye, then won his second match. Turkali lost in the semifinals, but won his next two matches, placing him at third in his pool.

Turkali, a junior, went to state his freshman year and placed sixth.

At 126 pounds, Gomez pinned his first-round opponent and won by technical fall in his second match. In the semifinals, Gomez lost by decision to Marcus Robinson from Arkansas City. Gomez then won his next two matches, placing third.

"It feels pretty great to qualify as a freshman," said Gomez, who enters the tournament with a 31-5 record. "I have a pretty good shot at winning it, and I'm really excited."

Eli Clouse wrestled for the Hornets at 132 pounds. Clouse was defeated in first match, but pinned his opponent in his second match. Clouse was then pinned in his third match by Conrad Montoya from Great Bend, ending his season.

At 138 pounds, Dallas Boone w was victorious his first match, but lost in the quarterfinals. Boone then won his next three matches, sending him into his third-place match. Bonne fought hard, but lost by decision to Trevor Dopps from Goddard. Boone placed fourth.

This is Boone's second time qualifying for state. The junior has yet to place.

Chase Ramirez wrestled for Valley at 145 pounds. Ramirez won his first match against Ethan Jeffries from Salina South, but lost his second and third matches, ending his season.

At 152 pounds, Don Boone pinned his first and second opponents, and won his third match by sudden victory. Boone lost in the finals by technical fall to Kameron Frame from Goddard.

Boone, a senior, is a four-time state qualifier. He placed second as a sophomore.

Tyler Boone wrestled for Valley at 160 pounds. He won his first two matches, but was defeated in the semifinals by Kendall Frame of Goddard. Boone then won his third-place match.

This is Boone's third time qualifying for state. The junior has yet to place.

At 170 pounds, Stoffel received a first-round bye, and then defeated his opponent in the quarterfinals. Stoffel lost to Troy Fisher from Goddard in the semifinals, but then pinned his next opponent. Stoffel lost to Kevin Mills from Kapaun Mt. Carmel in the third-place match.

Stoffel, a junior, qualified for state last year but did not place.

Lewis wrestled for Valley at 182 pounds. He lost his first match, but came back to win his second and third matches. Lewis then lost his fourth match and his seventh-place match.

This is Lewis' first state appearance.

At 195 pounds, Weldon received a bye and then won his second and third matches, moving into the finals to face Goddard's Cale Davidson. Weldon lost the 11-0 decision.

Weldon, a senior, has qualified for state three times. He placed third last year.

Holle wrestled at 220 pounds and became the Hornets' lone regional champion. Holle received a bye in the first round and then won in the quarterfinals and semifinals. Holle pinned Cyle Gautschi of Newton in the finals.

This will be Holle's second state appearance, after placing fifth as a junior last year. He enters the tournament with a 32-6 record.

"I did pretty well," Holle said. "I could have done better in some of my matches, but my third match, I felt like I did pretty well."

At 285 pounds, Caldwell became the third Hornet freshman to qualify for state. Caldwell started off with a fall over DaQuan Moore from Wichita Heights. Caldwell then lost in the quarterfinals, but was victorious his next match. Caldwell lost his final two matches, placing eighth.

Valley matched its qualifying total from last season.

"We did really well," said Holle. "We lost two close matches, but it feels good to qualify 12."

Goddard won the regional tournament, followed by Ark City and Valley Center.
