Security adviser delivers cyber tips By Chris Strunk Last Updated: June 18, 2015 Don't open suspicious emails. Physically destroy computer hard drives before getting rid of them. Develop an information technology security plan. Those were just some of the pointers Chuck Clanahan gave to Valley Center business leaders June 16. During a Valley Center Chamber of Commerce meeting at City Hall, Clanahan, who is a protective security adviser for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, said all industries are targets for cyber attacks. "There's no sector out there that hasn't been touched in one fashion or another," Clanahan said. Clanahan travels across the state to assess companies, train employees and lead community discussions about cyber security. He said he often hears that employees aren't trained to take steps to protect their companies from online attacks or breaches. Clanahan also said some breaches occur from the inside. "I can't think of an organization that hasn't been breached or hacked," he said. Companies should develop IT security plans to guide them in response to breaches and to protect against attacks. He said that such breaches can be costly to organizations in terms of a disruption in their operations or a hit to their reputations. Clanahan said the health care industry was the No. 1 target in 2014. Many cyber thieves are in search of Social Security numbers and medical records, which they can sell on the black market. Clanahan encouraged business leaders to use Homeland Security's website to stay on top of current cyber issues affecting companies. "The federal government is really being proactive," he said. |
