Beard battle helps charity

Beard wearers, it's about time your manliness got recognized.

The local Bearded Monkey Social Club is gearing up to host the Midwest Facial Hair Showdown June 27 at Le Venue in downtown Valley Center.

All bearded ones are invited.

It's a fundraiser for Heartspring, said Omar Shifrin of Valley Center, founder and president of the Bearded Monkey Social Club.

"All of the money goes to charity," Shifrin said. "It's a competition, but it's for a good cause."

Beards will be judged in seven categories — mustache (natural or styled), business beard (two inches and shorter), partial beard (chopped or goatees), full beard under eight inches, full beard over eight inches, freestyle and fake beard (which even ladies can enter).

Trophies will be awarded to first, second and third places in each category.

Registration starts at the door at 4 p.m. The competition will start at 5 p.m. Late entries will not be accepted. Entry fee per competitor is $15. Admission is $5 for spectators.

The event will include a silent auction as well as vendors.

Shifrin said he started Bearded Monkey Aug. 28, 2014, as a way to get together with other beard wearers, talk about beards, beard care and events to help worthy causes.

The club has about 15 active members who get together once a month.

Shifrin and other club members attend area competitions. Shifrin has collected two second-place trophies and a third-place award for his partial beard. Club member Kris Lowmiller recently won second place for his full beard six inches and under.

Lowmiller's wife, Kimberly Lowmiller, said the club welcomes new members and is looking for sponsors of the event. Call 371-2757.
